G'day everyone,

I've always had a soft spot for the signal box at Garsdale, especially when its all lit up at night time. Are there any other signal boxes that survive within a station setting? Ideally these would either be on the platform, opposite the platform or directly adjacent to the station.

All suggestions would be gratefully received!

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

As soon as I saw this thread title, I thought of Garsdale.

Craven Arms? Hellifield?

Yeovil Pen Mill still has one operational at the end of the island platform.

Preserved, rather than operational, is St Albans South - even closer to St Albans City station since they extended the platforms for 12-car trains!

Depending on your radius of directly adjacent, deep breath:
Manea, March East, Whittlesea
Littleport, Downham Market, Magdalen Road, Kings Lynn
Brundall, Cantley, Reedham, Oulton Broad North, Lowestoft
Acle, Great Yarmouth
Harwich International
Clacton
South Tottenham

Not forgetting Bury St Edmunds

Bare Lane - but I don't think it does much signalling nowadays. As far as I know it just controls the level crossing

Is there still a signal box at New Mills Central? From what I can recall that was pretty much located on the platform.

It was still there on my last visit which I think was October last year, just off the end of the Manchester platform IIRC, other similar boxes still in situ at Romiley, Furness Vale, Chapel-en-le-Frith & Hazel Grove, also mustn't forget Stockport.

On the Cumbrian Coast line:

Wigton
Maryport
Workington - 2 boxes!
Whitehaven
St Bees
Sellafield
Millom
Barrow
Grange over Sands
Arnside

I'm sure there are others.

Huddersfield, the signal box is on the island platform and is not the prettiest, being made of that attractive material - the blue engineering brick!

Sorry, to clarify, I suggested this because the box is located right on the platform at Stonehaven. There are plenty adjacent to stations like the HML examples given, I'm trying to think of other Scottish ones on the platform and still operational?

Hunts Cross, though it looks more like a nuclear bunker than a signal box!

Barrhill. Box at platform end and token instruments in station building. Is that the last survivor of this practice?

For preserved ones there's this little gem at Medstead on the Mid Hants.
There's disused boxes on the platforms at Topsham, Dawlish and I think Exeter Central too.
