    GTR hornsey depot

I know I'd rather do 20 stops a day than around a 100 stops a day which is the standard for Hornsey inner work. Also going down the NCL 3 times a day gets quite depressing. GTR Ts and Cs aren't bad. Sunday outside the working week. - Committed Sundays can be given away if you don't want to...

    GTR hornsey depot

Awful workload. It's got a little better. But that could easily change back in May when the timetables change. Think it's night shifts one in every 5 weeks too. And the night jobs aren't the nicest. Location is inside the ULEZ, so if you drive an older diesel car, and plan to drive in for those...

Does the location of some depots detract from the running of the railway?

I think it doesn’t help that Hitchin drivers don’t sign 700s which frequently stop through the station. But I’m old school and think all drivers should sign all traction at their TOC.

GTR - Trainee Train Driver - Cambridge & Welwyn Garden City (12/01/24)

I mean putting qualifieds onto apprenticeships to become DIs or managers.

GTR - Trainee Train Driver - Cambridge & Welwyn Garden City (12/01/24)

I'm surprised the TOCs aren’t scrambling for more apprenticeship money. They could make driver instructor/manager roles apprenticeships too.

    Sounding the horn……??

Also ask most people what a train horn sounds like and you'll likely get a two-tone response

    Sounding the horn……??

I'll always use 2 tones. I’ve not seen any convincing evidence anywhere that one tone is less noise polluting than two. (Especially if it’s going for 3 seconds!!) Also I’ve found usually those complaining about railway noise are those who somehow didn’t realise railways made noise when they...

    Sounding the horn……??

How do you test the horn on a prep if you can’t use it in the depot ? Or is its use only forbidden whilst the train is moving in the depot ?

    Qualified move to LNER

If train sims were actually any good, a good way to assess a candidate is on a simulator. You send the applicants a briefing pack about the basics of route and traction they'll be driving and then see how they perform in a given scenario. Seems to work well for airlines.

    Failure to lower pantograph

The 313 used to have a dual voltage alarm when it was going from AC to DC to warn the driver they were getting both supplies.

GWML / Elizabeth line disruption due to OLE down near Paddington

At the risk of digressing this topic. Is this an addition to the rule book I’ve missed ? Or is it company specific ? I was told as long as the train isn’t moving (preferably with DRA in, direction switch in neutral) then that was allowed.

GWML / Elizabeth line disruption due to OLE down near Paddington

Interesting story coming out about the driver on the problem train being a manager drafted in to break the GWR strike. https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/train-driver-caused-wire-damage-elizabeth-line-chaos-drafted-strike/

Thameslink driver refuses to move train 16/11

It turned up again on my feed today - I swear Facebook is watching me !! This time I copied the link. It was uploaded only 2 days ago. https://fb.watch/otBlJjzSXT/

Thameslink driver refuses to move train 16/11

Strangely enough today my Facebook feed had a TfL sponsored video in it of a London Overground Driver explaining the safety aspect of the yellow line. Has anybody else seen it ?

Thameslink driver refuses to move train 16/11

So if a train is extremely crush loaded and a driver then needs to make their way back through the packed carriages to resolve/investigate a fault, how do they get to that particular carriage if they’re not at a station ? You can’t get out onto the cess and walk back as you’d not be able to...

Thameslink driver refuses to move train 16/11

Think these types of delays might be a little more frequent should Minimum Service Levels (MSL) be introduced on strike days. Unless TOCs are going to employ crowd control measures onto platforms. The government have been warned that MSL are unsafe. DOO dispatch can be a tough call. I go with...

Minimum Service Levels Bill receives Royal Assent

It will be a shame that my trains on MSL strike days will be travelling very slowly with extra time spent performing platform duties due to overcrowding. (Oh and if they're too overcrowded and I can't safely walk through the carriages from one end to another then I'm not moving the train.) The...

What happens if a driver is late?

If it’s my employer's late running or cancelled trains that are causing me to be late to get into work, then I’d say that it’s not my fault and that it’s the employer's fault I’m not there on time.

Minimum Service Levels Bill receives Royal Assent

Exactly. At Great Northern, they're supposed to train the drivers who'll be driving on the Northern City Line a 2 week ETCS course for it's rollout next year apparently. Think that's over 200 drivers needing 2 weeks off roster. Without overtime, I'm not sure how it can be achieved.

Rail staff caught up in strikes

Some driver contracts have a Taxi agreement for early starts and late finishes.
