Seat reservations, how are they allocated?

I've never known it to be enforced at all on any TOC in either my case or with anyone else.

Should the GWR IET fleet be refurbished?

I heard from a member of the catering crew on a GWR IET last week there is a refurbishment :lol:in the pipelines for the GWR IET fleet with potential buffets. Of course I pinched myself to check I wasn't dreaming but yeah, he did say this.....Yeah....yeah I know.

    Public perception of railways

I never said Railways were perceived as anymore uncool than other forms of transport just public transport in general. The two points you make are very good comparisons.

    Public perception of railways

Not if you live in LNER land. Your trains have buffets. Pity the sufferings of us poor South Westerners...Oh, to have a soggy, freshly made bedwetting sheet ham sarnie from the buffet. I lay awake at night dreaming of such luxury......(Michael Palin)

    Public perception of railways

I think this has been driven into the British psyche for years. It's a type of Americanisation effect whereby the perception of public transport has always been uncool. Europe and the far east a completely different ballgame. Bad press as well doesn't help.

    Public perception of railways

At least there WAS a buffet in those days...Talking GWR here of course.

Why do some people get frustrated when their ticket doesn't get checked when travelling by train?

There are not necessarily gate line checks but I take the point.

Why do some people get frustrated when their ticket doesn't get checked when travelling by train?

This exactly. Why else would you be pxssed about this. Human nature.

Why doesn’t GWR run up to Birmingham or at least cover all of Worcestershire?

GWR wouldn't have the stock anyway, but I do understand the historical significance.

Clearing the Air - RDG Report

Myths about travelling by air? I think the RDG may well be a mythical entity themselves for all the good they do.

Fully reserved trains with unreserved seats

It is contradictory. If it's a fully reserved service then one coach being unreserved makes no sense. The number of seats being reserved is irrelevant. I know that this is common with TOC's but in the truest sense it's not accurate surely.

Which specific train journey is the most profitable in the UK?

I would think the same applies the Heathrow option with Crossrail.

    Azuma seating

I can remember the "worthy replacement for the HST" so often touted when these entered service. I think those will definitely get a few laughs now. They certainly got a few at the time.

Sitting with a person when a train is empty

I personally find it difficult but I take my hat off to you in accepting people sitting near you on a half empty train. If we are to move on perhaps old attitudes like mine need to change and for the reasons you point out. The beauty of that ideal world.

Sitting with a person when a train is empty

I once made a point to someone on a half empty carriage why they would sit next to me as my son looked on horrified at me. The carriage was half empty, it wasn't as if they didn't like sitting with their backs to travel and yes, there were table seats available. He did ask if anyone was sitting...

Article referring to passengers staging "sit ins" on cancelled trains

I understand the context and direction your conversation with Bantamzmen has taken but to say people not having funds for a contingency sounds irresponsible in itself. Not everyone can afford such luxuries I`m afraid even if in ideal world it would be the correct thing to do.

Why is rail travel in Cornwall so cheap ?

I once heard that the reason it's much cheaper is something to do with landowners when the line was built. Permissions and so on. Possibly to do with the fact it is also slow.

    Fiasco in Leeds (27/01)

Passengers they may be but I don't think somehow they're as fussy as a seasoned traveller when it comes to aesthetics.
