Do 86s on freight ever work independently?

In the last 10 years or so, single class 86s have been unusual but not unheard of. 86501 seems to have worked exclusively on its own until it was converted back to 86608 in May 2016. I've seen a single 86/6 on the GEML once, and a class 86/class 90 combo on Beattock, but they were uncommon. Nic

    ECML Class 90 diagrams

Does anyone know the diagrams the ECML 90s are working today (Tuesday 8th January 2019)? Thanks in advance, Nic

When did Mk1/2 loco hauled services end on the ECML

Resurrecting this thread, I have an image of 47620 taken on Sunday 14th June 1987 taken at Hadley Wood, working a down train of early Mk 2 NSE coaches in the early afternoon. I seem to remember this was a booked working at the time on Sundays... one of a small number out of the 'cross. Can...

GWR operating short 'HSTGTi' sets (see diagrams section for workings)

Back on topic a little: is the first 'castle class' mini HST working at the moment? Nic

Excellent. I hadn't realised this existed. Thanks, Nic

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

Is it possible to determine from any online source how many coaches are in a formation? Journey check will tell you if they are shortformed but not the actual formation on the day. Nic

    GN Class 717

I can see a 6C10 0200 from Dollands Moor ran on the 29th to Wembley, but I can't see an onward delivery to Hornsey. Was this a 717 delivery and how did it get to Hornsey? Nic

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

    1c89 1633 Paddington to Exeter SD was 802007 & 802006 today.

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

To confirm, are IETs working some or all of the Paignton weekday diagrams yet? I see they've made the SO jobs but I've seen nothing to suggest Paignton SX... yet. Nic

    Remaining GWR HST Diagrams

I did see these but I also see repeated messages that say 'wait until after the timetable change to be sure'. I'm intrigued that the lists imply 1P18 0642 Hereford to Paddington is an IET which I think makes it the only IEP on the Malvern-Hereford section. Nic

Former Grand Central HSTs now with EMT

Do the ex-GC fleet have captive diagrams or are they used ad-hoc alongside the other EMT HSTs? Nic

    Remaining GWR HST Diagrams

Early days, but can anyone confirm the diagrams from the start of the new timetable today with respect to the Worcester/Hereford route? Thanks in advance, Nic

    May 2018 Diagrams

I second this - but would add the remaining GWR HSTs as a 'really useful' set of diagrams. I suspect we're going to see changes next week with the HST fleet with (perhaps) the removal of the Hereford diagrams. Nic

St Pancras parcels trains - what was this working?

I shot the following train a few times at St Pancras in 1986/1987. My recollection was this was a typical consist, and it left maybe 2130. Any ideas on headcode, departure time and destination? Thanks in advance, Nic Night time mails under Barlows train shed by Nic Joynson, on Flickr

    Sentinel Shunters at Boulby Mine

I was at Boulby in mid June and there were 3 Sentinel 0-6-0 shunters present, all painted in all over yellow. No numbers visible, but one was named 'Charlie' and another 'Lady Potter', but the third (which was shunting) had no identification. What was that 3rd locomotive, and can anyone...

    Toton disused class 60s

It was - 59/2s. I agree the top speed of the 60s is their operational Achilles heal, but that aside, in terms of traction abilities the 59s and 60s are comparable. Given that the vast majority of aggregate trains out of the Somerset, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire quarries are...

    Toton disused class 60s

Although coal, steel and oil are in decline aggregates are healthy and growing. I believe the 60s have a real advantage over 66s in terms of their ability to haul heavier trains: if so there is a possible reason why they might be useful in the future. For example, while its not clear why a...
