Railway terminology: Carriages vs cars vs coaches

What different fixed-length MU's currently exist in the UK? (Not counting classes that are due to come into service). I have 1carriage, 2carriage, 3carriage, 4carriage, 5carriage, 6carriage, 8carriage, 9carriage, 11carriage, 12carriage and 16carriage. (So not 7's - due to be on Avanti and not...

    Gangway doors locked open

That's fine, except I'd estimate less than a third of units are configured like that. Even within some multiple workings. So surely if it's policy it's policy, needs to be done throughout.

    Gangway doors locked open

On some Class 350 units, it appears some train crews have chosen to lock the inter-carriage gangway doors open. This seems to be the minority choice however. Most 350s seem to have them in normal push-button-to-open service. I just wondered what best practice was in this case? Wouldn't there...

WMT class 730 distribution in the future

They will be type cleared on all routes though? And surely a driver would be cleared on both sub types? Can't even tempt you? Covering stock out of use? Emergency workings? Rescue? Future route changes after HS2? No takers?

WMT class 730 distribution in the future

Yeah, I was aware of that, windings and gears and such, but I had thought with a modern electronic traction motor if all that had become a thing of the past? Hence I'm wondering about the other technicalities; control software, pantograph tension, plus pantograph type for working in multiple and...

WMT class 730 distribution in the future

Why would WMR order the two fleets to 90mph spec and 110mph spec? Is it a huge cost difference or is there a technical reason? I wonder if the 90mph ones won't just end up being upgraded to 110mph in the future as happened with the class 350 project.

    Off lease HST's.

In any case: just wondering if anyone can reference any information from any of the leasing cos or dft relating to sale of the carriages? Can't find anything on Porterbrook, Angel or DfT websites. Thanks.

    Off lease HST's.

Do any of the scrapping companies or leasing companies have Mark 3 or 4 coaches for sale? It seems a shame that DfT are happy to give away Pacers but the 3's and 4's have to go in the bin. They seem like a very sound peice of equipment that could last a very long time in other applications.

Transfer of TPE 350/4s to West Midlands Trains (LNR)

Got a 350/4 ex. TPE un-refurbished today on LNR for the first time. In the "middle-manager meet" session the other day, a manager aluded to them suspending all but essential works on the 350/4's to get them in service with LNR. Were they only refering to internal refurbishment, such as removing...

    Class 315 Withdrawals

Why didn't TfL already withdraw all the 315s from the ECML? They clearly have the 345's in storage at Old Oak. And if they have a business reason, won't they end up with huge milage differences and therefore huge maintainance differences between their 345's that have only just been accepted into...

    Class 745 Stadler FLIRTs

Pleased to get to travel on the 745 from Liverpool Street at 1000hrs today, then the 755 over to Yarmouth and another 755, I forget the time, to connect back with the 1830 Ipswich to London 745 (same train). Beautiful ride. Smooth, quiet. A couple of seats don't line up with windows, but I can't...

Transfer of TPE 350/4s to West Midlands Trains (LNR)

350 410 is on 2K24 MKC > EUS today. Joined to a naked 350/1 i didn't catch the number for.

    iPhone touchscreens on Class 800/801

This is also an issue on the Class 395 Javlins on South eastern high speed. But curiosity: not on 750DC third rail after Ashford (to Dover in this case.) Only on the 25kV OHLE from Ashford to London. Is the power source running through a different transformer to the pax 230v sockets when on...

LNWR service from Liverpool to Birmingham and London.

So maybe I'm missing something here, they say it was a franchise committment to introduce the through trains in may. So the planning groups whoactually do the path planning and operations at Network Rail, DfT and LNR... What went wrong? Did they not have the knowledge to know the timetable...

LNWR service from Liverpool to Birmingham and London.

The Birmingham > Coventry > Rugby section seems to be one (of many) sources of headache for the west coast line. The mixing of local stopping with semi-stopping and fast services on two tracks is quite boring. I can't figure out how adding just one (bay?) platform at Coventry helps particularly...

Class 80x mobile phone use whilst charging under electric

Hi all, So I thought I was imagining things before, and to be fair this is still a very tenuous link: When I'm charging my phone on a GWR Class 80x and the train is under electric traction and on the move, the screen on my phone behaves very oddly. Double presses, no presses, missed presses...

LNWR service from Liverpool to Birmingham and London.

Great! Bring it on! Is it practical to have a 'by request only' stop at 125mph? I'd happily flag down a Pendolino, and pay a surplus to get to/from work on time. Perhaps some sort of buzzer and light system 2 miles out from each local station would suffice. Really, anything would be better than...

LNWR service from Liverpool to Birmingham and London.

I'm not sure where the next section is but the North Wembley junction was in use, so that section was live. I believe dets were set South of the Harlesden Junction, but that doesnt mean the line wasn't isolated further up I suppose. The DF was back in service pretty soon after the broken train...

LNWR service from Liverpool to Birmingham and London.

Trying to think out of the box: if the WCML Euston area is already up the creek, say down to the 2 slow lines already, and the majority of LNR services are off, VT have to follow anyway. Is there something in particular that would prevent VT from putting stopping orders at say MKC, HML and...

    Caledonian Sleeper

The Mk5 set is now in Euston 13 being unloaded of belongings. Front is being hooked up to a new Class 92. Don't know where the damaged 92 has gone. Up fast is still out. :'(
