43018 has gone for spares usage at Haymarket. It was taken by low loader and once stripped for valuable parts it will be scrapped. And presumably the cab will be kept knowing what can happen on the Scottish lines with trees etc.

I would call that good news to be honest, let's face it, once the East Coast stuff displaces the East Midlands stock, there is NO WAY much of it will run again, and improving ScotRail HST dispatch reliability can only benefit the HST cause.

Today saw ex-GWR power cars 43196 and 43071 move from Laira to storage at Long Marston with a full 8 car rake of Mark 3s. How many more 43s and Mark 3s are due to move to storage and approximately when can these moves be expected?

It was a 9-car set that went and more a collection of vehicles than a normal set as it included 3 TGS, 1 TF and 5 TS.

All very up in the air currently with what is happening with other vehicles, presumably awaiting a decision on the next Direct Award.

Without knowing any details myself, the move to Long Marston seems to align with Porterbrooks' new deal with St Mowden for the future of that facility.

https://www.porterbrook.co.uk/news/porterbrook-to-expand-into-long-marston
Porterbrook today announced that it has signed a 15-year lease with St. Modwen that will see the rolling stock asset management company take over future-direction and development of the extensive rail-connected Long Marston facility in Warwickshire....

So at least in the immediate moment, this was an isolated event?

Also, are all of the power cars used for the classic short HST sets (excluding 071 and 196) still stabled in depots or have any others been moved to storage?

Exactly as you say, everything is currently up in the air as to whether the next DA is given or not. Any additional Short HST Sets will either have to come from the Angel Trains stable (Most of the Power Cars are in Ely, some Power Cars and Trailers are in Laira after being stood down after Christmas) or Porterbrook (Nearly all are in Long Marston). However, I'd expect more trailers to be heading down if the DA3 is given after First Rail Holdings purchase of the Porterbrook 4 last year.

Yesterdays move consisted of all Porterbrook vehicles including 3 x TGS, 3 x TS-D, 2 x TS, 1 x TF in the order of 43196 / 41167 / 44068 / 42302 / 44042 / 44069 / 42310 / 42231 / 42094 / 42103 / 43071.

43020/191 went to Ely earlier in January.

GWR owned 43088/156/160/162 are likely to get interlock mods (and repaint) - there’s been work done on them recently, including a QL3 engine change on 162.

So how come the first trailers were so late to move to storage having not been used in the classic 2+4s, have they only just come off lease?

I'm surmising that the TF is the one that was used about 4 months back in a 2+5 set that was employed on an Okehampton-Weymouth charter service, can't confirm that was the only reason for its retention though.

Hardly. As the Porterbrook announcement says, they are not taking over the site lease until next year - and they have been sending ex-GWR HST rakes into storage there since January last year, when 50007 brought in some Mk3s from Bristol.

They have had stored vehicles there on and off for at least 15 years.

The question around the DA is more the terms rather than whether it will be given. It is near on certain that it will be awarded.

First Rail Holdings did not purchase any power cars from Porterbrook last year. They are owned by the franchise as 'Primary Franchise Assets'. You also assume that Porterbrook was handed money for them...

Do any of the scrapping companies or leasing companies have Mark 3 or 4 coaches for sale?
It seems a shame that DfT are happy to give away Pacers but the 3's and 4's have to go in the bin. They seem like a very sound peice of equipment that could last a very long time in other applications.

What other applications are those, then? It’s not like the ROSCOs haven’t tried to re-lease or sell them on.

In any case: just wondering if anyone can reference any information from any of the leasing cos or dft relating to sale of the carriages? Can't find anything on Porterbrook, Angel or DfT websites. Thanks.

Eversholt Rail Ltd own the Mk.4 stock and have a page on their website relating to specifications and potential use with other locomotives: https://eversholtrail.co.uk/fleet/mark-iv/

I imagine that Porterbrook, Angel Trains etc. would be open to offers for redundant HST trailers from serious buyers...

It's nothing to do with DfT.

Porterbrook and Angel have been talking to potential customers for the vehicles - just because it isn't on a website doesn't mean it isn't happening. In fact, if you advertise them on the website it probably makes the task harder as it just attracts more time-wasters: anyone seriously interested will know the relevant contacts anyway.
