HSTs would not be suitable for Waterloo-Exeter. That's often an 9-car 159 lashup already! The 159 cabs are already pretty small, not much space is lost.

Indeed; the problem of acceleration on the main line out of Waterloo might be one thing, but mega lashups (i.e. 2+8) west of Salisbury would kill the case off. HSTs have previously run as far as Salisbury out of Waterloo, but they wouldn't be suited on the Blackmore Vale route (i.e. via Tisbury). Keep them as 159s or use a more modern solution IMHO.

Yup. I could see a 5-car unit doing well on that route, although the 159s are fine at the moment. A bi-mode version of the 444 would be ideal IMO.

Edit: Although it might cause issues at short platforms like Tisbury, although SDO could be used as it already is when they're 6-car units.

As said there are probably quite a few far better routes to put HSTs on than Waterloo <> Exeter. This route should initially be used to soak up any 158s from elsewhere to allow more 10 car peak formations. Then when the 158/159s become life expired, perhaps at the next franchise change, order something that will still make best use of the 240m platform capacity at Waterloo. Maybe pairs of 5 x 23m units splitting at Yeovil Junction or Salisbury.

Alternatively they could try now for a small number of alternative DMUs with 1/3 2/3 doors to operate the Romsey rounders, helping peak dwell times, and then those 3 released 158s would allow more longer distance 10 car sets at Waterloo.

Mind if the Romseys are combined with the “Transwilts”, as some stakeholders are trying for, then anything might happen, eg a change of operator...

Indeed. The 158/159 fleet remains the ideal tool for Waterloo-Exeter especially given the need to split at Salisbury to match demand. It is an ideal route for those sets, which are suited to such long distance Regional Express trains.

I think as others have said, with more-or-less an all stop on new electrification in England at the moment, I would look at the business case to ease over-crowding in the XC core services, including those (grotesquely under-)served by the 170 fleet. Having 2+5 HSTs shifting people in peak-time on Birmingham-Cardiff, Nottingham and Leicester/Peterborough has a feeling of common-sense about it given the chronic over-crowding on these routes.

Although given the significant investment to get them up to post-2020 standards etc., there may be better options e.g. 68s and off-lease Mk4, cascaded 222s from 2022, or (ideally) complete fleet replacement with a bimode fleet.

Either way, it's not a great look for the industry to have sidings full of off-lease trains that look more or less the same some of Arriva's current fleet, and that rationale only stands up if there is some other plan.

Although briefly off topic, regarding the Class 47s, is that how they earned the nickname "Duffs" owing to their various (what seems to be) frequent breakdowns?

Saw a large number of HST trailer vehicles and power cars at Laira. How many of these are due to go off-lease and when?
Obviously quite a few short 'Castle' sets there and a few 2+4 short 'classic' sets filling in until the refurbished 'castle' sets are complete.

I passed this move on another train and could have sworn there was a PC on the back - you've now just confirmed that!

Have GWR sorted all the power cars and trailers they are keeping for 2+4 sets plus spares? and have the remainder been sent off-lease? if not how many power cars and trailers are sitting around waiting to be taken away, and by when?

Another batch of Mk3's has headed of for East Anglia today.

Not sure what hauled it though or what the stock numbers where.

Have any power cars been off leased that are not one of the 24, apart from 43056, that has gone?

Indeed not; all the Angel-owned TFKBs (407xx) that were with GWR are now stored at Ely.

Its worth bearing in mind that the original 1970s plan for cascading HSTs once the ECML, Midland and GW routes had all been electrified included using HST 4+1 sets on Waterloo-Exeter, doubling up at busy periods
Also for those saying an HST set would be too long, the class 33s used to routinely hall 9-coach sets on the whole route (7 passenger coaches and a full brake or GUV or other van at each end). The limit to length was the ETH index, not the platform size

43161 and 43162 are still very much with GWR and were in service last week (probably still out on 2+4 slam doors this week too but I haven't checked yet)
