Catering/dining options on trains should be identical in First and Standard classes

Moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/crosscountry-trains-advert-banned-over-%E2%80%98insufficient%E2%80%99-free-food-and-drink-claims%E2%80%A6.266299/page-3#post-6734073 We seem to be obsessed with classes in this Country. Why we cant just have buffets or restaurants...

First Group Sheffield - London via Retford open access proposal

This shows the terrible state our fare structure is in. Most people cant be bothered with it. Last time I went on a train to Sheffield it was in 1995. £34 RETURN! supersaver. What is that now in real money? That was the walk-up fare after 09.30.

First Group Sheffield - London via Retford open access proposal

Most interesting. i was a student at Sheffield Uni in the early 60's (so you can guess how old I am now!) When I had a weekend at home in North london, I usually caught the Thamesv-Clyde Express" or the "Waverley" that both called at Sheffield Midland in the afternoon on their journeys from...

ATOS Anne Announcements - Publicly Available?

Am I allowed to say that I cant stand Anne's voice. In fact I've stopped using trains as she is all pervasive at my local station, Milton Keynes! Am I the only one???

Is it the end for GBR??

Might be worth reading what Tees Valley mayor, Ben Houchen, has recently said. His view is that within 20 years there will be no need for any public transport: train or bus. Everyone will have access to self drive electric cars and taxis. I kid you not. But I doubt he is the only one with these...

Publication of Integrated Rail Plan for the North and Midlands

Judging by Mr. Sunaks reduction in air passenger duty on domestic flights, they are trying to encourage folk in the North to fly to the south West, rather than take an expensive and inconvenient train!

With hindsight, was the politicisation of healthcare in 1948 a good thing or a bad thing?

"socialists" rant and Tories make reasoned arguments. You are a good example of this charactarisation! The Consultants get paid well as they should, though nothing like as much as in the USA. Bevan "stuffed their mouths with gold" to get them to agree to Joining the NHS to start with. He...

With hindsight, was the politicisation of healthcare in 1948 a good thing or a bad thing?

This Govt. and certain posters on here dislike the NHS because it is a socialist organisation. The idea, aided and abetted by the right wing media is to snipe at anything which is State run. the NHS , BBC and even the police have been the chief objects of this policy. Tighten the purse strings...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

It isn't that easy to reverse at Bletchley. The Bedford trains can only come into platform 5. The way out is along Bletchley relief line 2. Is it even signalled for exit onto the down slow? If it was that easy it would have been done years ago.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

"You Think" That gives me great confidence. Not very successful were you! I thought you were a bit more intelligent than that. That was not the logic of my post No it's not correct. I should have inluded Stony Stratford, Woburn Sands and a few other places to imply that it was the area...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Even I recogise that. But you have already said you are sceptical of the railway being built. So that's a bit of a red herring. And even if, in the mists of time, it is built why would people use the train in sufficient numbers? Cambridge may well be a big economic magnet, but it is spread round...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Darlorich and others consistently criticise me for questioning my scepticism about the value of the Eastern bit of the E-W link. I'm too stupid and ignorant to understand the underlying principles. Well what are they? The crux of the argument seems to be that as hundreds of thousands of new...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Absolutely right. Only those qualified enough to to understand the technicalities should be allowed to post. The rest of us should just shut up and admire our betters! You really are a piece of work Mr Rich of Darlington!

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

"In May 2014, Network Rail announced that the line will be opened to 125 mph (200 km/h) running, the current top speed for InterCity services. also It is proposed that CrossCountry services, along with Chiltern Railways and London Northwestern Railway services will use the route.[36]" "By...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

One change: what from a train to a taxi or a bus! Who is in fantasy land now? Dont let your arrogance lead you to insulting people who have an opposing view to you. Have you thought you might possibly be wromg? Of course not, people like you never do! Dont tell me to stop. It is none of your...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Just because a lot of houses are due to be built, heaven knows when and where, does not mean the occupants will travel by train. The railway, if ever completed, may still not be convenient for those people. And what would they use the railway for? Cambridge and Oxford are centres of employment...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Travelling from Milton Keynes to Oxford on an X5 coach the other day, I wondered if it was worth proceeding with the EW project at all. As originally proposed as a fast cross-country electrified line suitable for inter-city type trains and also freight, it had some purpose. As a DMU local...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

You must have a very sad life if the cancellation of HS2 cheers you up so much! Get rid of the pinch points on theWCML. Ok, say where they are, produce costed plans from planning and economic experts. Tel us in detail what the new timetable will be! You keep waffling but there is NO substance...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

Apart from being a rather purile comment, it implies you dont think there is a problem anyway. You may be right. If you believe we are at 'peak railway' and that no increase in passengers is likely then of course stay as we are. If on the other hand you believe ridership will continue to...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

One of the problems with HS2 haas been that some rail and transport 'experts' have criticised it from the beginning. People like Christian Wolmar have constantly denigrated the project without ever costing any alternative schemes which would give the same benefits. This gives the Govt. a...
