South Wales Electrified Infrastructure "Pretty Ugly" - Local Residents Say.

I've lived beside electrifed railways for half my life and never seen a mast or other disfiguring junk. It's called third rail.

Why is the terminus situation south of the Thames so complicated and why was it never rationalised?

By simplify, presumably you mean less convenient. I choose which station to go to depending on my final destination, often with the option of then walking there.

Ticket for Hertford East and Hertford North

Yes, I had a fare reduction card. But she definitely said it would be cheaper!

Ticket for Hertford East and Hertford North

I purchased a day return ticket today at Tottenham Hale to Ware. I was advised to get a Hertford East ticket as it was cheaper which I understand as it is presumably a shorter distance to Hertford North and they match the fares. However, I was surprised when examining the tickets to find they...

    Class 221 and GPS

I travelled on a 221 out of Euston this morning. My phone having worked perfectly up to that point (it knew I was at Euston) as soon as I turned on my speedchecker to follow my progress, my phone decided not to operate any apps which used GPS e.g. maps, speedcheck . I restarted the phone...

Steam railtours coming through your local station

I use https://www.railadvent.co.uk/steam-locomotives-on-the-mainline. Seems to work ok.

    Crafting a fictional timetable

Based on the 1968 T/T, off peak trains left Addiscombe at 17 and 47, returning from Elmers End at 37 and 07. The journey was 5 minutes but only one intermediate stop (Woodside).

    Ipswich Platform 3

    I rest my case!

    Ipswich Platform 3

The whole point was that the Norwich service was the second train (actually the 1407) while we were waiting on the same platform for the 1358 to Felixstowe. So no it was not correct.

    Ipswich Platform 3

I'm sure you are right about getting lots of queries, precisely the reason I am suggesting some improvement in signing is needed. I think they are all one train only indicators.

    Greater Anglia Wi-Fi

It wasn't slow, it was non-existent.

    Greater Anglia Wi-Fi

I travelled from Felixstowe to London on Wednesday and was pleased to find an excellent Wi-Fi service on leaving Felixstowe. I was, therefore, surprised when joining the main line train at Ipswich not to find a similar service. Is this normal or was there a problem on the train?

    Ipswich Platform 3

I went to catch a Felixstowe train advertised on the general indicator as leaving from Platform 3b. It was not very apparent where the (it turned out) three sections of the platform were but having spotted a small sign saying 3b stop, I walked a little way north towards, in the distance...

    Overcrowding between Newport and Shrewsbury

Fair enough, but the guard could at least have apologised with an explanation. Thanks for the update

    Overcrowding between Newport and Shrewsbury

I had the misfortune to join the late running 1208 from Newport to Shrewsbury today. Bearing in mind this train serves, Cardiff, Newport, Hereford, Shrewsbury and on to Manchester, is a 2-car sprinter really the best that can be provided? The train was full and standing from Newport at least as...

    GW main line track condition

For no particular reason I travelled from Paddington to Newport today. I was very disappointed with the state of the track, or maybe the 5-car 800 train, I am not sure which. Particularly between Paddington and Reading, the track was very rough but strange bumps and rhythms continued at...

    Stopping at stations

Strangely I used to notice the long wait to alight on Southern trains compared with South Eastern. Now the situation seems to have reversed.

    Stopping at stations

I have not carried out any very scientific analysis but it seems to me (on South Eastern at any rate) that trains now slow down much earlier and then creep into stations where they stop (SE also creep through other stations!). In the "old days" of course the wheel was being constantly cleaned...

    Thameslink announcements

Travelling up to London yesterday, at E&C the "lady" announced the next stop as London Blackfriars "our final destination". I suppose you can have an intermediate destination, but this train was only ever going to Blackfriars and the "final" seems unnecessary. On our return, the message was that...
