12/04 Freights on Down Fast Stafford-Crewe

A simple solution would be optimising schedules, a more complex one would be NR trying to optimise wear, which I doubt.

    GWR short train lengths

Oh, so what GWR got was not a true 125 replacement? Thanks DafT

TfW class 398 Stadler Citylink tram trains

There is no Coryton to Radyr service and hasn't been for decades, and indeed no track. Not clear why Coryton would be better than Rhymney/Caerphilly for a service to Penarth.

GwR HSTs to be stood down

AFAIK no! the frames and bogies are the same as is the door ride height.

    Class 221 for Grand Central

If I recall correctly, unbraked wagons with a brakevan was class 9. An 8 would have a brake head. In any case moving a train with brakes locked over any distance would be a huge no.

How off-putting is it to change trains in GB - from rail regulars via 'normals' to OAPs to foreign visitors?

It is an attitude of mind fed by whether you believe most trains are close to time, and there are fallback solutions like the next train. Last year I made a 12 hour one-way journey finishing at 19h involving as follows: metro, train, metro, train, 3 trains, taxi (plus several walks). The only...

    TfW ‘Active Travel’ Class 153s

I am in favour of encouraging cycling but one cyclist plus one bike equals roughly three seat spaces. I hope they provide an equivalent contribution to revenue, especially as bike spaces are used even less than passenger seats. It obviously helps that the stock might alternatively be scrapped.

    "Crewe/Warrington blocked" - Avanti (10/02/2023)

NR saying lines open again but delays as service recovers.

Rail Crowding DfT report 22nd September

Try leisure = pleasure whereas commuters = work.

    Another fantastic day with Avanti

Really? A contract variation should be possible given the number Avanti are already creating! Maybe Avanti could even be made to lend LNWR some stock.

November strike action on National Rail suspended - impact on next week's service

Next step will be government to introduce a bill requiring 2 weeks notice to cancel a strike and workers who had planned to strike but don't will not be paid.

Grand Union approved for Cardiff to London open access by ORR from December 2024

This is a very good question for two reasons: 1) what rules will apply to open access post GBR 2) who will decide what a current TOC can do post GBR As it happens I doubt GWR currently has enough stock to compete, but I also doubt that enough traffic exists for a Swansea avoiding service.

Collision and derailment near Salisbury (Fisherton Tunnel) 31/10/21

Oh, so we can rule out a SPAD then (of either train).

Help please - Out of Court Settlement letter

Whilst I do not have legal training, my interpretation based on the statements you have made and the fact that you still have a now out-of-date hence unusable ticket is that a court would find your daughter innocent of any deliberate wrong-doing, indeed quite the contrary. Unfortunately, I do...

What exactly is a coherent cascade plan?

All of these could have been part of a cascade plan except there wasn't one. All except the 769 are suitable for the job with the jury being out on the latter which anyway should be relatively short lived on the currently planned operation. It would however be fair to say that the mk4s were...

What exactly is a coherent cascade plan?

And 150-159, 170, 175, 185, 331 ... The question is currently what to do with the sometimes specific stock being replaced after say 20 years by new more flexible or faster stock. The 158/159s and 170s have shown how suitable they are for varied front-line jobs and possibly more so than the...

    What is a train?

The response provided by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is " 'Train' comes from a French verb that meant "to draw; drag." It originally referred to the part of a gown that trailed behind the wearer." They also suggest the first trace of the word being used was in the 14th century. It also says...

Merseyrail (Liverpool) vs Manchester Metrolink (Manchester)

Taking the original question which is actually very well phrased, both Liverpool and Manchester in the mid-20th century had heavy rail lines running into "peripheral" stations (Liverpool: Central, Lime Street, Exchange; Manchester: Piccadilly, Central, Victoria). In the case of Liverppol...

Collision and derailment at Neville Hill Depot (13/11/2019)

When drivers got personal smartphones they were told to switch them off and put them in their bag. Now they have a built-in PC within hand reach which is on permanently (and at say 60 degrees to the forward sight line). Just saying ...

Transport Committee - Coronavirus Emergency Measures

At least the DfT has admitted that they caused those "toxic trains" to exist. Hopefully from now on they will prepare the infrastructure first, and say "no can do" to influential MPs until they have done it.
