Avanti's twitter; I have a journey starting shortly Wigan/Crewe/Birmingham via Avanti then West Midlands.

Thinking I can set off now to Piccadilly and hope Avanti or Northern/Wales accept my ticket to get to Crewe? Contacted Avanti and they want photo of my tickets which I can't do.
Due to emergency services dealing with an incident between Crewe and Warrington Bank Quay, all lines are blocked.

The info is short of details, what blockage, how long estimated?

NR saying lines open again but delays as service recovers.

"Lines have reopened between Crewe and Warrington Bank Quay following the earlier incident where a person was hit by a train. Trains may still be delayed by up to 30 minutes or cancelled whilst service recovers.

Disruption is expected until 12:00.

Avanti West Coast Customer Advice:

To help you with your journey, tickets will be accepted on the following:

  • CrossCountry services between Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh via York
  • LNER services between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh via York
  • Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Preston"

Thanks, I can keep to my original schedule and make my way to Wigan, if the 1331 Avanti Wigan - Crewe is delayed it doesn't matter as the second leg will have to take me regardless of being advance.

It just set off from Edinburgh on time so should be fine by the time it gets to you.

1S42 bird strike rather than PHBT. That's why it's reopened reasonably quickly.

Condolences to the family of the bird, and relief it isn't a human! But must have been a whopper to halt a train, or has it ended up amongst the wires or points?

Must admit, heard of bird strikes on planes and how dangerous they are, but trains? New one to me!!

My journey continues as planned, thanks for the info and updates.

Just depends on what piece of equipment is damaged (some parts are vulnerable and may have to isolate equipment to move the train) or could be as simple as a smashed windscreen.

Something the size of a swan or goose slamming into the front of a unit running at something approaching full line speed would, quite probably, have the potential to cause a fair bit of damage.

While not as heavy as say a roe deer carcass, dead Swan or geese are still relatively heavy objects to lift. And they would do damage to a moving vehicle car train plane etc I'd say, if the impact was in the 'wrong' place.

I was in the cab of a 66 passing through Romsey when we hit a swan. Only doing about 30, but it shook the cab. Most unfortunate.

390157 (the Pendolino involved) was turned around at Preston and formed the 08:52 Edinburgh to London starting from Preston today. Unfortunately it only made it as far as Birmingham International due to a train fault.

It was initially believed it may have been a person strike hence full on emergency services activity and blocking lines etc. However tests done on site as well as searches proved it was an animal.

I was on it and it did indeed, ground to a very shuddering halt just before, sat there for about an hour (hope nobody missed their flights) and then limped in with something isolated (possibly the door-brake interlock, possibly the passcom circuit) to terminate and go forward ECS. The guard gave a fair bit of slightly mumbled technical information on what was going on (lots of breakers tripping out in Coach F, allegedly, which had given an indication of the passcom being pulled when it hadn't been) but didn't communicate very well what to actually do, and there were quite a few confused people, a couple of whom I managed to prevent getting a lengthy tour via Northampton.

I did note that the hazard light on Coach F wasn't on when the doors were released if that gives any clues.

I wonder if the incident had damaged something.

Good luck anyone claiming Delay Repay for a journey to Intl, though, it got close enough to the station that it was recorded as having arrived 10 minutes late, when in fact it arrived about an hour after that.

Many years ago I was in a DMU, where you could sit behind the driver looking out, north of Dorchester when we hit a pheasant.
He stopped, ran back and picked it up and put it on the flat bit in the driver's cab, dripping blood on the floor. He opened the door and said to us the wife will look forward to cooking that.
Don't know whether you'd be allowed to do that today
