    Breather Switches

Thanks for the info. So conversely does the railway in Spain etc suffer from extreme cold temperatures as their rail is stressed at a much higher temperature?

    Breather Switches

With the current spell of hot weather causing so many speed restrictions being implemented why aren't breather switches taking out this excess heat expansion? Is there enough of them on the network or isn't that their primary purpose? Sorry I can't provide a photo of an example of a breather...

    Overhead Neutral Sections (OHNS)

What purpose do overhead neutral sections (OHNS) serve on the AC wires? Is it some sort of "border" between differing overhead sections for ease of isolating without switching off the entire network? Also do trains have to lower their pantographs when they coast through them? Thanks to your...

    Permanent Speed Restrictions

Thanks for all the replies, v informative. Good to chuck a bone out there and see how it gets chewed so to speak! If a PSR is published in the Sectional Appendix what differentiates that from the linespeed which is also printed in the S.A? Is the advertised linespeed in effect one continuous...

    Permanent Speed Restrictions

I know the difference between an ESR and a TSR but what, if any, is the difference between a TSR and a PSR? If there is why isn't a PSR just marked down as linespeed then as they aren't mentioned in the sectional appendix? Thanks for anyone who can shed some light on this in advance..

    Fishplates

Just a quick question,in the rule book it states the action taken by a signaller when "both fishplates are broken on the same rail". Does this mean two fishplates on either end of a 60ft length of rail or two fishplates opposite to one another across the 4 foot (ie one on the cess rail and one...

Trains running with one headlight lit.

Simple question with probably a good explanation behind it;why do so many trains run with only one headlight lit during daylight hours. Any reasons?

    Interview for Signaller

Just trying to remember what questions they asked when I was interviewed. One was how you would go about organising a street carnival, I think they wanted to see if you could think things through in a logical order and any possible consequences. Another was what I would do if a herd of cows...

NR plans to axe 800 signalboxes

Is the UK network unique in the number of signal boxes still in use that actually overlook the line? I know the Netherlands signal their entire network from a centre in Utrecht, is this the case everywhere in Europe? Im just interested how Britain's railway seems to be or maybe more...

    Railway news sites

Thanks, your IMHO is very much appreciated too. Think I'll look up one of these titles next time Im in Smith's although with my limited knowledge I might be better to avoid Modern Railways for the time being. Not quite cerebral enough yet ha ha

    Railway news sites

Im fairly new to the rail industry and this forum so just out of interest....what magazine(s) do people think is the best for general news regarding the railways?
