Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

I doubt persuading somebody who has already paid a significant amount of money and can prove it that they have to pay again is any quicker tbh. But yes, I can see why they'd rather have the barcode and I don't support the OP's suggestion that just writing the 11 digit code on a piece of paper...

No ticket acceptance and no rail replacement during long term engineering works at Ince?

Quite. If the fares aren't a big deal, let Northern cover them.

Can children travel on adult tickets?

They might be the full usage terms of the railcard, but you also have to comply with the conditions of the ticket. E.g. if you buy a Network Railcard-discounted off-peak return ticket on a weekday, the ticket restrictions might say travel after 09.30 is fine, but the Network Railcard conditions...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

Credit card sized ticket. I.e. fits in the credit card slots in a purse or wallet. (For those of us old-fashioned enough to carry such a thing around with us).

TfW Does Not Show Rover/Ranger Tickets

I suspect TfW would be fine with that, sadly.

No ticket acceptance and no rail replacement during long term engineering works at Ince?

When there are major problems on the Woolwich line, Southeastern and Thameslink negotiate ticket acceptance with London buses. So I've used my Slade Green rail tickets on the 89 or 99 bus to Barnehurst before. Could also have taken the 99 bus the other way towards Abbey Wood to connect with the...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

But you can fish out your CCST before you get off the train and keep hold of it using your front teeth until you reach the gateline! Trickier to do the same with a phone. I must admit I often print out e-tickets (at my employer's expense - shh!) because if I'm watching Picard on my phone when...

    GWR website useless

Thanks I'll try that! What if I want to travel on a weekend not covered by a 7 day travelcard season ticket? I'll only be buying these irregularly, as needed for work. I don't work enough days in the office to make monthly or annual worthwhile. If I buy a Z1-6 day travelcard and a cheap day...

    GWR website useless

I've just got a GWR Smartcard and added a 7 day Z1-4 travelcard to it. I have just a couple of questions: 1. If I want to travel beyond zone 4, can I choose between buying an appropriate ticket to extend the validity beyond zone 4 either on paper or on the smartcard? If using a paper extension...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

Not really, no. Very few people ever find themselves in a position where they can show the reference number but not the barcode, since they receive both together. So it's hardly a floodgate everybody's going to surge through once they hear they don't need the barcode. You could argue...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

You tell people they need the barcode, but then you waive that requirement for customers who have paid more than a certain amount, provided you are able (with a little extra effort) to verify their ticket without the barcode. You don't need to tell people. You just do it. Other businesses waive...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

All I'm suggesting is guards and National Rail gateline staff on longer distance routes with higher fares should be able to verify e-tickets without the barcode. I don't think it'd be a massive reputational risk to the railway if passengers could make a cross-London transfer on an e-ticket, but...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

I don't see why a significant number of people would want to do that. You make your booking, they send your tickets through to your phone. That's what you show them whenever tickets are checked.

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

Maybe as a courtesy to those passengers who have spent more than a certain amount per passenger person leg on their ticket, the railway ought to be prepared to take the time and trouble to verify the ticket manually if, for whatever reason, the passenger can produce evidence of the booking but...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

Do you know what proportion of paper ticket sales are down to the customer choosing paper tickets having been offered an e-ticket? I use paper tickets more often than e-tickets but that's only because the tickets I buy aren't offered as e-tickets. Just interested in how the ToD sales break...

How unpredictable are the algorithms that idenify the cheapest split ticket options?

That's true, but on the other hand if I want to go to Doncaster and Hull Trains are selling a ticket for £15 which the forum's site can't sell (which was a situation I found myself in last season), where's the potential upside to waiting? By how much, realistically, is that ticket going to come...

How unpredictable are the algorithms that idenify the cheapest split ticket options?

I agree evidence of the fares going up would be useful evidence. On the other hand, even if LNER were able to show, for instance, that the fares were as likely to fall as they were to rise during the period when they were restricting the ability to sell tickets to themselves and their...

Why does the barcode on e-tickets have to be shown?

Is MegaTrain still going? I've definitely travelled from Waterloo to Weymouth on a reference number written on a bit of paper before.

No ticket acceptance and no rail replacement during long term engineering works at Ince?

To a very small degree, though? Last time I went to Greater Manchester I bought a weekend "travelcard" but it was only valid on trams. There was a day ranger available but it wouldn't have been cheaper than buying separate tickets on different modes as far as I could tell. You'd have needed to...

Can children travel on adult tickets?

So it does, sorry, I should have spotted that. On that basis I agree - the restriction defines an adult and a 15 year old can't qualify. It seems at odds with the general policy of charging children less than adults rather than more, but I accept that doesn't alter the restriction.
