    Family Travel/Question

As long as she doesn’t work at the church I can’t see it being a problem as leisure travel. And yes the children the same. Follow you around in what sense? On the train? I don’t see why not if it’s leisure. I’m sure she will soon get bored! Welcome to SWR

    Advice requested on staying focused

I use risk triggered commentary plus commentary driving. It works for me. As the person above has said, when you’re leaving ‘next station stop is…’ I also check my schedule frequently as I’m travelling along and will also say this out loud if there’s a bit of a gap in between stops.

    Question: Shifts/Flexibility

Working mum here. Like the others have said you get given a roster 6 months in advance so you know what you’re doing in advance but they aren’t set days. Again as someone has said spare turns you can be moved time (toc specific as to how many hours this is) so that may pose a challenge if you’re...

Female Drivers - What's it REALLY like?

female toc driver here. I buy my own work trousers as I don’t like the work issue ones. Rest of uniform is fine, get to wear polo shirts which are really comfortable. Don’t get treated any different and I get on with everyone I work with. I’ve had to nip to the toilet as an emergency once but it...

    Train driver work life balance

I would go for it honestly it is a great job but very prepared for some sacrifices. My husband is at home so there’s always someone there for the kids. But it’s hard and mum guilt often creeps in but they get the best out of what the job offers in pay and rewards such as free travel. I take my...

    Train driver work life balance

I’m a train driver and parent of 2 (5&7) and you won’t be treated any differently to any other employee to be honest. You can try and swap shifts if you prefer earlies or lates. Holidays are rostered to you so it’s a case of having to try and swap for school holidays. Leave over Christmas is...

    Medical Operation whilst a trainee...

I was on a waiting list whilst going through training. I got given a date towards the end of my training and I was able to defer the date by a couple of months. Kept my manager informed and I was back at work ready to route learn 2 weeks later with no issues.

Returning to work after a fatality??

Hello, I had a fatality last April. I was new in the grade but I am still driving now. I had lots of support from my management and colleagues and I never felt I was alone. I took up some hobbies to help cope and I have found this has really helped me. I’m happy to chat further if you want

    Driver - Uniform- Advice please

Hello! Female driver here, I wear polos mainly with a jumper in winter and a soft shell jacket. I don’t like the work trousers too much so I buy my own from M&S! I also wear shorts in the summer as I get quite hot at work. I have the odd shirt lying around though! But I feel most comfy in polo tops

Returning to active driving position after fatality

Hello. I had one back in April. I took 3 weeks off. In that time I came to work, had a cuppa with my manager etc. I was never pressured to get back to it but for me I found if I had stayed off longer I probably would have found it harder to get back into it. I found it a bit tough at first, I...

Train driving suitable for a mum of 2

Absolutely not. I would miss more with a 9-5. They would have to go to breakfast and after school clubs etc. shift work can work for families but you need to be super organised and realise that you can’t be there for everything.

Train driving suitable for a mum of 2

Hi! Driver and mum of 2 smalls here too! Yes it’s hard. I struggle with lates because sometimes I’ll still have to do the school run knackered but I will just go back to bed after. Hard missing things and going to work on weekends and school holidays but that’s the job unfortunately. I do look...

    Driver's responsibilities after a fatality

I had one a few weeks ago and this is very similar of the process I went through. The BTP, MIO and emergency services were fantastic. Felt very supported by everyone at the time and also afterwards.

Single mum thinking of train driving. Possible?

Hello! Female train driver and mum of 2 young children here albeit not single. Single-handedly the best job in the world in my opinion! It is however tough with the shift patterns- missing assemblies, parents’ evenings etc. It requires military planning for childcare etc. You will need childcare...
