Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway Diesel Gala

I will be down on the Saturday. I would appreciate any advice on getting from Risborough to Chinnor. :-)

East Coast Franchise Short Listed Bidders

Do you need to use Grand Central though. I do and I think they are much cheaper and nicer staff than EC trains. John

Dawlish sea wall and the storms

Indeed the ECML may also have difficulties in the areas close to the English/ Scottish boarders. In this case the track is quite high up above the beach. John

Local stations on busy main lines (that don't get the service they should)

Well there certainly could be more trains but what I think the BA line needs is a track upgrade and and possibly extending to Crook. Its a pity the line through Crook to Durham wasn't left in. I think there is a lot of potential for passenger growth in the area but it needs infrastructure...

    Blaydon and Dunston stations

I wish this new service well but understand why for something so close to Blaydon center the station is so difficult to get to. This is how it used to look.

    Sunderland Central

There seem to be problems with Sunderland Central Station again. The recently installed false ceiling seems to have been largely removed, at the north end it looks like comcreate has been removed from the supports above the tracks and there are deposits of some salt like substance appearing on...

    Port of Tyne expanding

I believe I have seen photos of the Pylons with ex NER steam locos running past. The cross Tyne pylons are indeed a local landmark. I wonder if much of the rest of the cabling could now go UG.

    Port of Tyne expanding

Some photos of the loop under construction today. It looks as if the loop will rejoin the running track before the pylon and judging by eye on the Class 66 hauled train that went past it will be long enough for a 23 wagon train. John

    Port of Tyne expanding

Not sure if Biomass trains are supposed to be lighter as wood weighs less than coal.

    Port of Tyne expanding

Well I suppose they are not going to deliberately build a loop that is to short. :) Are they talking of trains of up to 23 wagons with each wagon being longer than what is previously been used? This seems to me to be longer than the loop at Green Lane, and presumably they would want to...

A level crossing at both ends

Just to mention that there is a road under bridge in Sunderland that has a station at both sides. OK one, Monkwearmouth is closed but there is another station Stadium of light just after it.

    Port of Tyne expanding

You seem to be ahead of me on this. Any idea where the new rail line will go? John

    Cardiff Bay station

And you would have to cross a busy road as well though it is a shame the station is not that bit closer. I guess there is plenty of space to put a light rail line in.

    Port of Tyne expanding

Initially, the Port will submit applications to extend the Port's multi-functional berths at Riverside Quay by 100 metres and provide the additional facilities for wood pellet including multi-purpose sealed storage, enclosed conveyor systems and a new length of railway line. It will involve the...

    Port of Tyne expanding

Not sure. It does seem that there are big plans for future expansion. John

    Port of Tyne expanding

Put that way things are going to be busy. Its a pity Boldon ASDA and NISSAN were built on the direct route between Tyne Dock and the Leamside line. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Is the document referenced in this link a proposal to reinstare part ofthe Blyth and Tyne? John

    Port of Tyne expanding

ECML capacity – Leamside Line re-instatement - With predicted increases in wood pellet traffic out of the Port (the Port is currently investigating the potential for investing in new handling facilities) even more capacity is needed than the ECML and Durham Coast route can offer. The...

    Port of Tyne expanding

I had heard about this. I would imagine it is well needed. John --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Rail capacity is crucial for cargoes being transported to or from Port of Tyne and must be increased to facilitate the capture of market growth opportunities that already exist today...

How long has there been unmanned stations?

Yes although depends on your definition of stations. In the NE at least passengers could sometimes board from the ground a coach attached to a coal train after having bought a ticket from a pub or a pit office. I dont know if this meets your definition of "unmanned" or even a "station."

    Rail North proposed future electrification

How easy would it be to convert it to the National standard? Obviously new metro stock would be needed. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- The Teesside to ECML line always seems slow to me. Maybe the track is worth upgrading.
