    Northern Short Forming Again

They could, if the DFT approved the spend on leasing costs, the cost of crew and maintenance staff training, the ongoing running and maintenance costs, and paid for somewhere for these units to be stabled and serviced as Northerns depots and sidings are pretty full already. The chances of this...

    Next Booked Working Details

Should be quite easy to work out which set will form the next service at Windermere!

June 2024 reopening of the line between Clitheroe and Hellifield for passenger trains

Should hopefully also pick up some business in the opposite direction e.g for Settle to Manchester shopping/leisure trips on a Saturday which weren't easily doable by train previously. Northern do tend to struggle for crews though on a Saturday especially in the latter half of the year.

    Heaton Chapel on Sundays

Yes think there was 2tph on a Sunday at Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme pre 2018. The Buxton services called as did the Alderley Edge/Crewe services. (Only 1tp2 hours continued to Crewe on Sundays pre 2018)

    December 2023 Timetable Change

The am peak service wasn't overcrowded from New St or even Stoke as was too early to be. So it was quite sensible to stop it at Congleton.

    Northern Class 769 Diagrams

If there are not 3 serviceable 769s available, none come out as there needs to be one available to rescue a failed unit. (And one to rescue that incase of further issues)

Trivia: Stations more than one change from London

Also can be done with one change at Brighouse or Mirfield, or once daily (plus overnight wait) at Halifax or Bradford Interchange

    December 2023 Timetable Change

I know Northern were proposing to run a peak only Liverpool to Stalybridge service calling all stations except Patricroft and Eccles using 4 car class 331s. The Wigan NW to Manchester Vic peak services would be retimed to call Patricroft and Eccles in both directions. I'm not sure if this is...

Blackpool crews also sign to Morecambe (not Heysham).

Trivia: services which are never crewed using depots along the route

No, these services crewed from Wigan Wallgate, Blackpool North and Liverpool LS. Ok this one may be cheating a bit as Wallgate isn't far off the route, but it definitely isn't on the route.

Trivia: services which are never crewed using depots along the route

Northern Preston to Ormskirk Preston to Blackpool South Lancaster to Morecambe/Heysham Windermere to Oxenholme/Lancaster/Preston Wigan NW to Manchester Victoria (via Eccles) Helsby to Ellesmere Port Bradford FS to Ilkley Stockport to Stalybridge Stockport to Chester Manchester Oxford Rd to...

    Class 331 at Stoke-on-Trent

Extending the bay at Stoke has been investigated and pretty much ruled out. It would need signalling, track layouts and crossovers completely changing north of the station. Would be tens of millions to do. If longer trains are regularly needed on the line, and disposal and shunting into the...

Trivia: Fast and slow direct trains

    Leeds to Wigan service

Yes sorry, I meant electrification all the way from Wigan to Stalybridge 1679363770 Extending the Leeds and Blackburn's to Southport on current timings would still give decent turnaround times at Southport (nearly an hour on each, interworking is unlikely imo). 6 car Stalybridge and Oxford Rd...

    Leeds to Wigan service

In May 2018 it was a Leeds to Southport and a Stalybridge to Wigan NW service. These became a Stalybridge to Southport and a Leeds to Wigan NW in 2019 before 769s were introduced. When Stalybridge electrification is complete it may revert back to the former.

    Temporary timetable during Wigan-Bolton electrification

On mainly evenings (and some full days) where the line via Westhoughton is closed they have no choice but to run trains via Daisy Hill (there will also be days/nights where both lines are shut and trains will run via Chat Moss too). Westhoughton will have replacement buses, but all Northern are...

    Temporary timetable during Wigan-Bolton electrification

There are some late evening services Monday to Thursday that would normally run via Bolton are diverted via Atherton line . These would usually call at Westhoughton but have additional calls at Daisy Hill instead.
