Birmingham International car park for airport use

Glad to hear it's allowed, good way to support the railway financially while avoiding fairly outrageous airport pricing! The only moral issue would be if the car park was getting so full, genuine rail users couldn't use it, though I imagine that isn't anywhere near the issue it may once have been.

FIP to Italy and France. Any stories of your experience?

You may have already said that, but what @rvdborgt said is correct: Free coupons are valid on domestic TGVs, you just require a (often very cheap) seat reservation with them.

    Southeastern Europe trip

The downfall of the whole metre gauge network was a bit of a tragedy. Large (economically incomprehensible) investment followed by almost complete collapse. Hopefully we don't see the same thing on the standard gauge network... Does anyone know what the medium term plans are for the Patras end...

Overengineering seems to very much be their thing! God knows how they pay for it, probably better not to ask...

    Southeastern Europe trip

Nice report. Aren't there plans to bury/tunnel this section? I'm not sure if that's a short or long term project, but a lot of Greek projects seem unlikely/incomprehensible, but seem to get done somehow, seemingly under the radar!

Trip to Birmingham for Class 323s

Should be able to buy it from any booking office nationally or hand held ticket machine, but you get a DTX/I196 'Daytripper Exchange' that is formatted for normal ticket stock. Only if you're catching a bus on it do you need to 'exchange' it at a booking office locally for one on proper stock...

How likely am I to be able to "turn up and go"?

Gotcha, sounds a lot more sensible now! :E

How likely am I to be able to "turn up and go"?

I didn't like to add that, I thought I was being cheeky enough...

How likely am I to be able to "turn up and go"?

Good god, first weekend of freedom and you choose to go to Birmingham?! That'd seem to be the biggest issue.

    Meadowhall Travelodge Sheffield

I gave up on Travelodge years ago, find Premier Inn much better. To me Travelodge have a similar problem to Burger King, their legacy estate. The cost of enhancing their properties to a higher standard would be huge and probably unaffordable. In the case of Travelodge, the thin wall issue...

Most Intimidating Place To Wait For a Train

And that's saying something! Unfortunately that was predicted by many when the new station design was revealed, that it was totally uncontrollable. The old station was just about manageable and in those days Birmingham city centre was less of a Zoo...

Visiting UK for 1st time in 2019

I think that might be rather misleading for this chap. While we might not consider the UK system to offer 'comfort or a quality experience', particularly compared to what we've had in the past, I believe it'd be completely wrong to give the impression that that comfort levels on the UK rail...

Welsh Highland Railway or Ffestiniog Railway

If only one, it has to be the Welsh Highland. Following the reopening of the entire line it became the clear superior of the two for me. The route is more interesting and varied. Personally I'd say the scenery is better on the WHR, even with taking into account the views lost on the Ffestiniog...

    Interesting Encounter With A Driver!

I wonder whether it was their last day too, as most staff I know keep as many found keys as they can for spares! Odd but nice of them I suppose.

    Great Escape advice

Just to confirm, LM Guards don't do Penalty Fares. They're not even issued with TIR forms. The only thing an LM Guard could have issued would be an UPFN. Could have been an RPI though.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the info. :)

Who would have made this decision

I'm thought this service was cut by BR prior to privatisation on low usage/cost grounds, maybe around 1993? :| If it'd survived until privatisation, I can only see that Scotrail would have taken it on, like they did with the WC sleeper.

Delays at Alnmouth and how NOT to handle it!

How many people were in First? If there were a good number of people in there, then I'd argue he did the right thing not declassifying it.
