A £9.5m project to cure a bottleneck for rail services in York has been completed.
An additional line and new junction has been installed at Holgate, at the south end of York station.
Engineers started work on Christmas Eve to bring the new track and signalling systems online. The work was completed in the early hours.
Network Rail said it carried out the work over the holidays, while no trains were running, to minimise disruption.
"At a basic level it will mean less time spent waiting on board a train to get a platform outside York station," Phil Verster, route managing director, said.
"On a wider level this is one of a number of schemes we are delivering on the East Coast Main Line by April 2014 which will allow faster services and more trains to run on the route."
