I was just going past High Wycombe and I saw car markers with things such as 9R, SR, 4R at the end of the platform. I’m guessing these stand for the reverse point, but please correct me if I am wrong.

It is where terminating trains need to stop such that DOO mirrors/camera screens can be seen by the driver after he changes ends and needs to use them for a southbound departure.
