It's been running for quite sometime now. It's normally booked for a 150 or a 156. In the past, it's been the 1522, 1527 and now the 1529 service!

I have noticed a 156 running on that. That unit usually ends up working on the cumbrian coast, eventually making its way back to Heaton depot

Always has been when I've caught it. It's a good alternative to the TPE services, especially from Salford Crescent.

If you refer to the December 08 timetables it was originally introduced included then as a Hazel Grove to Morecambe service. However, a revision before the timetable became live made it become a Hazel Grove to Barrow service.

In the December 08 timetable there was also a late afternoon Buxton to Hazel Grove service, where passengers for Stockport and Manchester had to change at Hazel Grove for an onward connection on the service booked to be a class 180.

A sequence timetable revision saw the Hazel Grove to Barrow service start from Buxton with the Buxton-Hazel Grove only service removed.

There are only a few Northern services per day which bridge the gap between Preston and Lancaster - one of the morning services originates at Millom and goes as far as Preston IIRC.

Note, not all of the Northern services on the Cumbrian Coast/Carlisle go back to Heaton - there are a few units which will stay overnight at Carlisle but will eventually get back to one of the main depots.
