Trying to find out if the 170 3 car formation are always formed the same way round with the center car No1 end always attached to either the 50 end or the 79 end??

Any help or advice will gratefully be received.

It would appear so. The XC units have a little sticker at each end of the centre car saying either 50 or 79, which would tend to indicate which end should be coupled to the 50XXX car and which to the 79XXX.

Generally units can only be coupled to the 'correct' ends due to jumper arrangements. Looking through my 171 paperwork these are the same as electrostars, whereby from DMOS A no. 2 end will only couple with no. 1 end of the MOS, and no. 2 of the MOS will only couple with no. 2 of DMOS B.

Older multiple units have different arrangements, such as 455's where coach 1+2 no. 2 ends are coupled and coach 3+4 no. 2 ends are coupled (hope that makes sense?)
