Do any of you have a Hornby Railroad Plus class 20? If you do, what's your view?
I thought it was merely the old Lima tooling; but it has wire handrails and it seems to be upgraded tooling.
2025 sees this Loram Rail example selling for a tidy price.

Interesting Hornby are doing a Railroad Class 58....

Interesting too that they are doing a re-run of the VEP, one in early NSE and another all-blue one. Hope they get the motor in the right place. Not convinced Hornby will correct the cab windows ... Looks like the blue one is from the early "Bournemouth" units 7701 - 7720. No surprise there are no external lifting lugs. Now if Accurascale and Bachmann can add chains...

Edit: I hope they correct the colour of the front-end gangway - looks black in the images. Did any early VEP run like this?
These re-runs will be based upon the retooled versions that came out last year, so the motor bogie will certainly be in the brake area. If the windows are wrong on that version then I'd expect that to still be the case.
As these are only renders, they can be incorrect anyway. The renders of the aforementioned VEP's from last year showed a large Lima motor in the passenger compartment, but this was always known to be incorrect.

@Sun Chariot That looks quite decent actually. And I still have the old Lima model

I'm surprised Hornby haven't done a retooled blue/grey version of the 4VEP. Curtains would be lovely too. Clearly this can be done...

Given the preponderance of the other major manufacturers in the market now, I'm not surprised Hornby are concentrating on the younger would-be hobbyists with their Railroad range. I might actually be tempted to buy a '58

In one of the loft's railway boxes, I also have a Lima 20 (blue), plus half a dozen Lima 47s (blue / large logo / GWR150 / IC / RF grey) which, in the mid-1980s, I thought were quite decent models for their time.

Fairly certain the old Lima tooling was brought back in 2008 for a run and had some quality of life upgrades done then, like replacing the pancake motor with a 2-pole. Someone will know more than I do.

RailRoad Plus seems to be a decent range for the price. Amazing what a few high quality decals and etched plates can do for an old tooling.

Yes I have 20.222 (blue) and I think a couple of Lima or old Hornby Class 47s (maybe Hornby but Lima tooling?)

What's the difference between Railroad and RailRoad Plus?

Railroad plus is supposed to have enhanced livery application and a simple DCC sound feature I believe.

Fair enough. Better not make them "too good" then as nobody will pay for the super-detailed premium models (from Hornby). Maybe they should just stick to Railroad/toys and let the big(er) boy manufacturers (e.g. Bachmann, Accurascale/Cavalex etc.) take over the detailed stuff...

Hornby's recent announcement includes OO models of Bulleid's Tavern Cars.
I have zero need for one - but I  do rather fancy it... :D

Indeed - they do look good, but likewise, I'm not sure they were ever in service anywhere near my area of interest on the SR! Rule 1 isn't enough to get £130 out of me either - could get a Maunsell 4-set second hand for that price ;)

It’s good to see a number of modern units, some railroad and some full fat, plus some classic train sets in the new Hornby range. I think the modern stuff is the future, so happy to see a step away from excessive amounts of express steam.

Hornby's LNER Coronation "streamliner" coaches (R40223, R40224, R40225, R40226, R40227) have been released and they look superb; particularly he beavertail observation car. Do any of you have them?
No, but my Dad has the observation car - it is very nice indeed. A niche model perhaps (whereas some of us like the mundane), but nonetheless extremely impressive.

:lol:Does Rule 1 get invoked and the beavertail visits southern metals? :D
There's not a lot to run on yet! (But absolutely not! )

(My dad is very much Rule 1 - and all power to him. Buy what you like!)

There is a beavertail preserved which could go anywhere but the other one to that Hornby have currently released. Awaits the next release.

Not seen any discussion of this yet so will chime in - how has Hornby not noticed that the train set Azuma is far better value than the railroad 2 unit pack
Interesting 8-) Do you have links to both? Is it these ones?

R1288M "Junior" range 3-carriage train set, pre-order price £179.99

I can't find a 2-carriage pack.

R40350 4-carriage pack. £289.99

Thanks

Apologies, I suppose 2 unit pack is a bit misleading. I should have said the driving ends, alas

£30 difference between the two yet the carriages are £34.99 each - assuming the train set comes with track and controller so almost makes you wonder why they bothered. Numbers between the two are the same iirc too.

The 2 driving cars pack states it's new tooling. I guess the train set uses the older tooling.
Train set will also be the new railroad tooling. Train sets are generally good value anyway so it's not surprising.

Popped in last night and took a couple of pics. It has tail lights and interior lights as standard (with keepalive capacitor built in).

The silver linings and the patterns on the chairs are absolutely stunning. Also impressed it has working tail lamps out of the box.

When Hornby go all in, they go all in.
