Hi Guys and Gals,

I am looking to get some info on the interiors of Class 421 and Class 423 units prior to the facelifts that they had in the mid 80s, in particular the style of moquette used on the seating.

Photos would be great, either of the interiors themselves or of the style of seat covering used.

Thanks in advance for any assistance :).

Kindest Regards,

Richard

VEP's universally had the blue/green check (also known as Bournemouth blue), as did the phase 2 CIG‘s(i.e, the thinner seated ones built in 1970 for the Portsmouth line.

The phase 1 CIG‘s with the deeper seating cushions (built in 64 to replace the Brighton line stock) had trojan upholstery and reading lamps incorperated into the luggage racks (the fittings were still visible even after the tungsten lighting had been replaced by flourescent tubes during refurb).

Hope this helps.

Some of the phase 1 CIG‘s were also refurbed with stripey blue green and red uplolstery during the 80‘s when they went into jaffa cake livery, but I don‘t think this lasted long.

Thanks yorksrob,

Can you recall if the seats in 2nd class were covered in 'Bournemouth blue' in their entirety or was the upper part a separate style, ie. like the dark blue as characterised on most of the refurbished DMUs?

Thanks again for your reply,

Cheers,

Richard

S Yorks, usually
Here's a 4-VEP/Cl.423 from 1983, somewhere near Ashford, Kent, showing upholstery the same all the way up.
(apologies to Duncan if he's looking in - it had been a long day)

Up to about 1980 - the 4-VEP'shad very 1970's orange curtains in the second class (standard class then) - held in a bow - removed for obvious reasons - but one of the sights of mid-summer were trains running along at speed with flapping curtains through the droplights. First class retained them - later a nice dark blue colour - retained by a practical clip arrangement.

When they were retrimmed by NSE in "Network Blue Blade - and with new lightning ery - they looked rather good I thought. Incredibly reliable trains - SW used to get 99% availability out of its allocation.

I agree, the VEP refurb worked really well in my opinion. So much so that I preferred them to the refurbed CEP‘s.

Very poigniant reminiscing about proper trains, particularly given that I‘m currently wedged onto a very busy bus seat 142 on the Calder Valley !
