North East Rover eh? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit envious. Anyhow, back to work, enjoy the bash...

I've just caught up. A good couple of days there despite the problems. Some good photos too.

Further back, that photo of that painting is amazing! Very clever!

Shame about the knitting coming down but at least you salvaged something from what could easily have been a mega disaster. Should you by any chance run into 91130, please say "Hi" to it - my last one!

Good luck for your remaining days.

It was 91130 which brought down the wires I believe!

Looking foward to the rest of the report. Not had much luck so far so hopefully it'll come good on days 3 and 4!

Good thing you escaped when you did, plus a new ECML shack.

Yeah, I consider myself lucky that I wasn't too inconvenienced in the end.

Also 156455 is a very unusual appearance up north, we seem to be seeing a fair few Allerton machines around these days!

I was wanting a Heaton one, though, so wasn't overly happy with it.

I've got a 4 in 8 North East coming up this month too, but my aims will certainly be a lot different to yours!

HSTs by any chance? :)

A shame about the connection at Cattal on the first day, but it sounds like you had a good one anyway. The disruption must have been really annoying on day 2 as well, but at least you got a couple of milkfloats that you needed for 1000. Having had 68011 at 999.75 before clearing it I can see your frustration with 91114 - Hopefully it'll appear for you later in the rover!

Well day three was much better than day two.
As for 91114, all I'll say at this stage is that it's no longer on 998 miles.......

Surprised Kite didn't comment on your getting 91114!

A most frustrating day, definitely, but at least you got something out of it!

Life's too short to get worked up about these things, I'm happy with what I managed to do and that I managed to get home unscathed :)

North East Rover eh? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit envious. Anyhow, back to work, enjoy the bash...

Give it another couple of years and I'm sure we will be doing plenty. :D

Thanks - the painting is superb.

Good luck for your remaining days.

Cheers.
I could have done without the disruption but these things happen.
I saw 91130 yesterday as it happens - the little scamp was stood with its stock in the naughty siding adjacent to Doncaster station.

It was 91130 which brought down the wires I believe!

Looking foward to the rest of the report. Not had much luck so far so hopefully it'll come good on days 3 and 4!

It was indeed 91130 that caused all the problems on Thursday, hence its appearance at Doncaster.

Day three went well and I'm about to head out for day four.
I'm happy with my progress so far :)

I've as always enjoyed reading about your last couple of trips and the photos were nice too. As others have said that painting is incredible.

Day two is traditionally followed by day three and this move was no exception.
The third day proved to be the best one of the lot.

I began by doing 158757 from Bradford to Leeds.
The first loco of the day was 91122, not one of my requirements but I was only doing it to Doncaster.
At Wakefield I viewed the EMU that had come from Doncaster and knew that it contained a couple of required coaches, so filed it away in the memory banks for later.
As it happens my memory didn’t need to be too good as the first Northbound 91 from Doncaster was already over a thousand miles, so I boarded 321902 for a short run to Adwick.

There were actually two coaches in 322481 that I needed so I had a choice.
It was 78163 that I went in for the run back to Doncaster.

I decided I would do the next Edinburgh service even if it was an unwanted machine.
There was a shack score on my mind, near York.
It was 91106, which is well over the thousand, so I did as planned and boarded.

I’d no sooner sat down than two things happened.
First of all the guard announced that there would a short delay as the driver had requested some assistance; the second was that I saw, through the windows of 322481, the distinctive curved “Flying Scotsman” nameplate that I immediately knew meant one of my lowest mileage machines was heading to Leeds.
Naturally I didn’t let the opportunity pass.
I grabbed my bag, jumped off 91106 and made a rapid transfer from platform 4 to platform 8.
91101 was then taken for a near sixty-mile round trip to the city of my birth.

91101 back at Doncaster:
91101_2017.03.10_Doncaster by Phil Wood, on Flickr

It had bugged me that 91114 had finished the previous day on 998 and a bit miles.
It turns out it was just a 24-hour bug as it was “Durham Cathedral” that was next up on an Edinburgh service.
Shortly after leaving Doncaster it became the sixteenth member of the thousand-mile club, thus meaning I’m over half way.
As it was now in the club I saw no need to stay on after York, instead choosing to go after a station that had been at the top of my wants list for almost a week.

144014 was taken from York to Poppleton, meaning that I’ve cleared all the shacks on the Harrogate loop.
There was no repeat of the Cattal shenanigans and I had no problem getting from one platform to the other for a short wait which culminated in 142064 and 150138 back to York.

Member number seventeen of the grand club was 91132 which was about a hundred miles short when I got on.
Newcastle is eighty miles from York.
Happily, I could go much further North than that, get a new station in and only have a short wait.
There was no contest so 91132 was taken to Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Proof that I went to Berwick and all I got was this lousy photo:
91132_2017.03.10_2_Berwick-Upon-Tweed by Phil Wood, on Flickr

The problem with Berwick is that the loco is off the platform, so when my train South arrived I had no idea what was pushing.
If I had been given the opportunity to choose the perfect 91 for his train I would have gone for my lowest mileage member of the class, one of two that remained under five hundred miles.
That was 91131, so imagine my glee when I disembarked at York to see it was that very loco on the rear.
This leaves me with just one, 91120, under five hundred.

See:
91131_2017.03.10_2_York by Phil Wood, on Flickr

It was now time to head home and this could be done throughout from York on a Blackpool service.
This was worked by 158784 and my arrival in Interchange signalled the end of a most enjoyable and productive day.

Saturday the 11th was the final day of the rover.

I had no particular plan, just more of the same 91 mileage accumulation, with at least one shack scratch to keep the scorecard ticking over.
158844 began the proceedings by taking me from Interchange to Leeds.

The first Kings Cross service was a HST and the next, half an hour later, didn’t stop at Doncaster so I saw no need to hang around; especially when I saw that a coach requirement was on the Donny local.
This was 77989 of 322485 and was duly sat in for the entire length of its journey.
I now need just two vehicles from West Yorkshire’s allocation of EMUs – one each from 321901 and 322481.

Once at Doncaster I had a short wait for a Scotland bound train.
Unfortunately, this was in the hands of 91106.
I decided to take it anyway, but only as far as York.

There was one station on the Scarborough line that remained on my needs list.
As with several other stations it was one that I visited before but it wasn’t recorded as it had been done on units in the days before I recorded such things.
This was Malton and 185116 took me there.

185116 leaves Malton:
DMU 185116_2017.03.11_Malton by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Of the fifty-one members of the class four have been cleared for both ten miles and all coaches.
Any one of the other forty-seven would have done as a means of getting me away from Malton.
Sadly it was one of the my four least wanted, 185149, that did the deed.

Happily my next move gave me something I wanted, sub thousand mile loco 91116.
With thirty miles added to its total I left it at Doncaster.
The next Edinburgh was 91104, definitely not wanted, so I elected to look at the next Leeds.
This was most certainly wanted, with 91108 doing the honours.

91108 at Leeds:
91108_2017.03.11_2_Leeds by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I did this for the round trip and landed back at Doncaster with some thinking to do.
After getting off 185149 at York earlier I had seen 91112 heading South.
This is one of my lowest mileage ones but unfortunately it was next stop Kings Cross and I didn’t think the guard would look kindly on my North East rover.
I had looked on RTT and seen the platform it was due to arrive in, then I’d looked at the next booked departure from that platform.
Hardly a scientific method but if it worked as I hoped it should be on the 16.50 off Doncaster to Leeds.

I needed to make sure I was in place to cover this, so only had one move I could do.
This was 91109 to Wakefield for 91121 back.
Neither of these were mileage requirements.

My eyesight isn’t the best in the world and I did a double take as I was sure I saw my train approaching with a 90 on the front.
I was under the impression that the 90 didn’t produce on a Saturday.
Nevertheless, a 90 it was.
90019 to be precise.
It wasn’t exactly what I’d been hoping for but was still a nice machine to get.
I’d only had it twice before, the last time being on the first of September 2001 when it had been sampled from Carlisle to Crewe on a Pathfinder tour.
Another surprise occurred at Leeds when the train pulled into platform 1.
Not a platform I’ve ever done on a Kings Cross service before.

A 90 in platform 1:
90019_2017.03.11_4_Leeds by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After getting a few snaps I decided that I’d had enough for today, so I walked round to 158792 which was waiting to leave on a Huddersfield via Bradford service.

Looking back, I’m pleased with the four days I had; it was nice and relaxed, even the de-wirement on Thursday didn’t affect me too much.
I had got two 91s over the thousand but, perhaps more importantly at this stage, I had got another four that bit closer.
Of the fourteen locos still below my target eight are within a single Wakefield – Kings Cross run of reaching the goal.
I’ll see how it goes on future London trips but once the Satsuma’s start appearing I can see myself doing another and festering at Doncaster.
In addition to the locos I got twelve new stations in, a few wanted coaches and a nice run on a DBS 90.

I'm on the same efforts as you but you're a good way ahead of me! I'm only on 5 members of the 1000 club with the 91s.

But with at least 15 members of the class very close now I feel like there may be a period coming up where I fly through a few!

Certainly helped my mileage efforts last night when I realised I'd missed a significant journey for 91131 and bumped it up to 986 miles!

Day 3 was certainly productive, as was day 4. Yep, my North East later this month is for trams.

Hopefully you'll be able to get them all cleared before they're withdrawn!

Thanks lads.
I had my first 91 in 1989 so should really be in a much stronger position!
Not for the first time I'm playing catch-up.

And lo, it came to pass that the Great Central Railway provided the multitude of cranks with a diesel gala and the cranks were pleased.

45135 and I drove down to Quorn and Woodhouse where we had no sooner purchased our tickets than the shunter shuttle pulled in.
It would have been rude not to, so 08480 and 08694 in tandem took us to Loughborough.

It seems that many people on board, like us, had done 08480 on its last (I believe) passenger working – a Pathfinder tour in February 2000.
It was nice to reacquaint ourselves with the loco.
The same move also produced 56089, 58036, 60004, 73108 and 73129 – you don’t get tours like that anymore, sadly.

Seventeen years on it was back in the limelight but this time it had no less than three of its sisters for company.
Our first mainline loco action was provided by 37714, resplendent in its newly applied Railfreight Metals livery, which was taken to Rothley Brook.
31463 had been on the rear for that run and so was nicely position to haul us back to Loughborough.
It was now time to get our only winner of the day.
It was back to the shunter shuttle, which had 08907 and 08528 on the Southern end.
These were done for the duration of their run to Quorn, although there’s not really much choice as that’s the first stop out of Loughborough :)

Four gronks, in order 08907, 08528, 08694 and 08480:
08907_2017.03.18_05_Quorn_& 08528 & 08694 & 08480 by Phil Wood, on Flickr

We photographed the four shunters heading back from whence they came and then welcomed another loco that had been absent from the haulage book for some time, 33063, which had last been sampled at the NVR in 2007.

33063 arriving at Quorn:
33063_2017.03.18_2_Quorn by Phil Wood, on Flickr

We fancied a decent run on the Crompton so took it to Leicester North then all the way back to Loughborough.
Another member of the same class, former Weymouth stalwart 33116, was next but only as far as Quorn.
Another run on 37714 followed as we had one of our favourite machines on the agenda, 25035.

37714 pulling into Quorn from the South:
37714_2017.03.18_03_Quorn by Phil Wood, on Flickr

The rat, as enjoyable as ever, was done for the full fifteen mile round trip to Leicester and back.
We were now left with one loco from the line-up still to sample.
This was 20098 and was on the next Rothley Brook service.

We left Loughborough for the last time and enjoyed a bit of Whistling Wardrobe action through to the reversal point where 37714 took us back North, but only for the twenty chains or so to Rothley station itself.
We could have stayed on board this to Quorn but the Rothley Brook services get looped between Rothley and Quorn and have twenty minutes sat there during which time they get overtaken by the following service from Leicester.
We were now done for the day so it made sense to get the later train and reach the car ten minutes earlier.
This decision was made all the easier as it was 25035 that was doing the deed.

The 25 approaches in the gathering gloom:
25035_2017.03.18_9_Rothley by Phil Wood, on Flickr

The Rat provided us with a splendid end to the day, after which it was just a case of a nice easy drive back to Yorkshire.
As ever the GCR had given us a hugely enjoyable day out.
We’ll be back :)

Such a great railway. My cousin and his family live in Quorn so I get to go on it quite a bit. I've been to a couple of diesel galas there, it's a great experience as you're rolling along and another train passes you on the double track accelerating away from a station. Just like the old days when you've missed a plus one at Taunton :)
37714 looks the business too. It's nice to see a heavyweight in triple grey.
Looked like a very pleasant day.

All those 08s, the 33, the 25 and the 37 are required here! Wish I had seen that gala, but will have to make up for it in May on the SVR!

Some great phots of the day. Looking at the timetable, you must have done the shunter shuttle with 08907/528 at the same time as me! I thoroughly enjoyed the day as I scratched all four shunters plus the immaculate 37.

Once again I have been snowed under with "stuff" which has caused my absence from the forum.
Seeing my stress levels rising Mrs 13 chucked me out of the house for a few hours yesterday for some R & R.
After concentrating on 91 mileage last month my red pen needed a work out, but I had to go somewhere within an hour's drive.
Sheffield trams it was, then.

I began with 116 Meadowhall to Cathedral and took up position, determined not to move until a winner appeared.
Happily, it was a short wait as 118 soon showed up.
I took this to Spring Lane.

I had spotted a requirement heading the other way, so gambled on making it at Granville Road by taking the next service, which was worked by 123.

My gamble failed, 105 was leaving just as I arrived at the (quite some distant away) other platform.
The chase was on.

Cream liveried 120 was following 105 and took me back up the hill, to Hollinsend.
I wasn't taking any chances.
However 105 was to remain absent from my book a while longer, as the next arrival going towards the city centre was another wanted set, 102.
Never turn down your winners.
I knew 105 was on the Herdings Park to Cathedral services so I stayed on 102 to the latter and set up camp there.

102 pulls away from the Cathedral stop:
Sheffield Tram 102_2017.04.01_Cathedral by Phil Wood, on Flickr

105 wasn't going to escape me.
Eventually it arrived and terminated.
I breathed a sigh of relief when we started moving - at least 105 wasn't going to be one that bugged me in future.
Well, so I thought.
I like to get trams for over a mile so intended on staying aboard for an enjoyable run up the hill to somewhere like Spring Road.
Alas, it was not to be.
At Sheffield Station we sat for a while, the lights went out, came back on and went out again.
The ticket inspector began to walk towards the cab.
The driver turned round and made a slicing movement with his hand across his throat.
This didn't look good.
Then he made an announcement.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I regret to announce that due to a fault with the tram this service will terminate here, all change please."
Blast.
At 55 chains, mostly down hill, that means I still need 105 for a decent run.

My pain was eased somewhat when, after 105 had sculked off towards the depot, another wanted set, 125, arrived going the same way.

This was done to Gleadless Townend.

Compensation for the 105 debacle:
Sheffield Tram 125_2017.04.01_Gleadless Townend by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I now needed just one tram, 104, to clear and hadn't seen hide nor hair of it so decided to go after shacks.

123 was up next, all the way to Hillsborough.
Adjacently numbered 122 followed, to Shalesmoor.

Nothing noteworthy happened for a while, so in order to prevent boredom (no doubt in vain), I'll just list the next few moves:

110 Shalesmoor - Middlewood
117 Middlewood - Hillsborough Park
121 Hillsborough Park - Leppings Lane
116 Leppings Lane - Bamforth Street
120 Bamforth Street - Malin Bridge
120 Malin Bridge - Infirmary Road
108 Infirmary Road - Langsett Primrose View

This was all the stops that side of the centre done, so with five remaining, all on the Meadowhall branch, you don't need to be Einstein to guess where I headed next.

115 was my chariot; it wasn't going to Meadowhall so I took it as far as Cathedral.

115 arriving at Langsett, Primroses may or may not be viewable in the lower left hand side, my flower knowledge is very poor :):
Sheffield Tram 115_2017.04.01_Langsett Primrose View by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After that it was:
109 Cathedral - Meadowhall South Tinsley
108 Meadowhall South Tinsley - Nunnery Square
117 Nunnery Square - Attercliffe
111 Attercliffe - Woodbourn Road

That was my penultimate shack, so it just remained for me to take 116 to Carbrook and my task was complete - all Sheffield Supertram stops visited, making it the second network to achieve this feat after Croydon earlier in the year.
Also in common with Croydon, I need just one tram to have had them all, mind you I won't be satisfied until 105 has cleared the mighty mile mark!

After scooping Carbrook it was 116 again, for the fourth time today, to Valley Centertainment, just to see if the name was still as ridiculous as I thought it was.
I decided that, yes, "Centertainment" is one of the worst words ever devised by man and headed back to Meadowhall and my car on 114.

Sounds like a good day on the Sheffield trams. Shame about 105 failing, but it gives you another reason (other than getting your last tram) to go back!

Congrats on clearing the shacks too!

Firstly that gala sounded amazing! Would have been plenty of winners there for me. Secondly well done on only needing one Sheffield tram. I need to have a good go at the Sheffield tram network as I need most stops and still need quite a bit of the route.

A nice day out the trams there. Unfortunate that 105 failed (probably quite an unusual event).
