Simple really...did it ever happen? Can anyone provide a photo or any evidence that as the Intercity liveried 89001 in late 1989/early 1990, it dropped onto a Mark4/225 set.

Have had a bit of a trawl, but not found anything as yet.

I remember it whistling past on Mk1s, Mk2s, Mk3s but only Mk4s when reactivated by GNER. I also have a fond memory of seeing it suddenly outside in GNER blue at Brush having not known it was being reactivated, but that's another story.

Will be delighted to see it back at some point.

It was by the station at Crewe a couple of weeks ago, along it seemed with examples of other various AC electric loco types, all in nicely presented BR Inter City livery, almost as if they had all been freshly painted.

We had a previous discussion along similar lines and concluded that the 89 seems to have only gained TDM equipment later, possibly under GNER, hence even when you see photos of it with a push-pull modded HST set in 1989/90-ish, it hauls it conventionally.

I think if it did haul Mk4s it would've only been 'pull' at that time and turnarounds might not have allowed that without a delay to departure.

That was my thoughts also, however I just read that a photo of 89001 hauling a mk4 set working a Kings X - Leeds IC service taken on the 16th February 1990 exists in the book “East Coast Electrification” by Colin Boocock. Haven’t seen it myself but at that point in time it surely would be wearing BR IC livery?

Though 'hauled' could still mean conventionally worked, unless the photo was to show the DVT leading and the 89 on the back propelling in push-pull mode.

Thanks for answers, I'd never picked up on that re TDM. I think I've got that book so I'll have a look later and post it.

Update: Here you go, photo and caption from the Boocock book noted above, nice to find the answer to my question was on the bookshelf at home. Thanks all for help. Photo taken by Dr W A Sharman as captioned

Thanks for posting that, very interesting! So according to the caption the loco was tdm fitted by that point, I’m guessing it must have been only a small time window from the first full mk4 225 sets entering traffic and the 89 being withdrawn - I wonder if a picture will eventually surface showing it in propelling mode?

Given the delays with delivering the Mk4 fleet and the original ‘standard‘ formation being 8 coaches (although quite a few 7 or even 6 coach sets turned up due to shortages initially) thats pretty early for a full 9-coach set to be in traffic?
