A career as a signaller

Not sure if I'm allowed to ask this question. How much detail is required in the interview answers?

Each question has a couple of probing questions to follow up with if the interviewers feel you have not expanded enough in an answer. If you find you are continually being asked follow up questions in a signaller interview then you are not providing enough detail.

I got confirmation from HR today that all my pre-employment checks were complete. They've requested a start date from my LOM but they did mention in the email this could take a while due to limited spaces at Signaller school. I know the LOM is chasing up Signaller school dates I'm just hoping I won't be waiting months to get started

Very limited places at school just now and I heard a rumour this week that training (which is currently coordinated by York) is being completely devolved to the Routes from summer this year. It is a nightmare trying to book a place for new starters at the moment.

Yea, the LOM did mention that signalling school may be run locally from May/June time. Guess I'll just need to wait and see

I know the Management Team on Western wanted to take training in house but where told No, this was about four years ago however.

With each route having a ROC now with classrooms and simulators it makes much more sense to tailor training to each routes needs, and of course financially.

Dragging people from the South West upto York for 12 weeks just doesn’t make sense.

For the York future opportunities I got the offer pack with all the pre employment things to fill in on the 24th Feb had medical on the 25th Feb got the nod today for a start date of the 27th April
i got the offer pack on 24/2 and had my medical last week but not had confirmation of a start date yet. I presumed all the York future opportunities would have been on the same school dates, I’d not even given a second thought about it possibly being a later date than 27/4! I might email recruitment tomorrow for clarification. Have you been advised about the hotel and what the first week will consist of as I heard that the school start date is the week after. I’m presuming week 1 will be some form of induction.

It took two weeks from medical to the letter,

This was all the letter said.....
Hi All,

We are pleased to inform you that all your pre-employment checks are now complete and we are now in a position to agree your start date.

Please can you confirm that you are still ok to start on 27th April 2020?

We will then forward this onto the Hiring Manager to agree your reporting instructions for your first day. Once the Hiring Manager has replied, we will send you the hire confirmation email, with all necessary information

Thanks for sharing this, I’ll give it another week before I chase then, as it’s only been 1 week since the medical.

A good friend of mine started as a signaller at Three Bridges ROC last October and all their training has been either locally or in Ashford - with the occasional visits to other boxes I believe.

At the moment even for people trained elsewhere the team in York handles the bookings centrally, makes up the class lists, deals with accommodation, liaises with the trainers and manages all the apprenticeship stuff (which does not apply in Scotland). My understanding is that they will stop doing this and it will be up to each Route to handle.

Great news and hope to see you there. Can I ask when you had your medical? Just trying to figure out when I’m likely to hear anything re start dates.

I’d love to see a automatic lever frame for somewhere like London Bridge ! lol

Lots of busy Southern Region boxes used miniature lever frames...

Clapham A (until 1990ish)

Waterloo (until 1984)

A mate worked both of these. Still maintains that miniature levers were nicer to work than lever frames or NX...

I got that online form yesterday, then this morning an email asking if I could still start on the 27th, I responded to that and got my confirmation, hope you hear something soon.

There was a minor issue with pre-employment check that I've since cleared up. Recieved the confirmation e-mail for the 27th april start

I bet it took ages to learn all the routes using levers!
I did see a YouTube video of the LU SB at Edgware Road minimum levers, looked fantastic.

A huge congratulations, and welcome to the best job on the railway to all the new guys.

You’ve done the easy bit now, not the hard bit starts.

Dont want to piss on anyones chips but I have a feeling that york campus will stop all courses to protect the ROC staff from corona.

The silver lining is with so many signallers being in the older age category corona will create plenty of vacancies.

God help us all.

Did you get an interview invite today?

Yes i got an invite for an interniew at the Basingstoke ROC in 1 week for a Grade 7 Position ( Feltham ASC ) ( it was external ) .

I applied in January the 20th for this offer but in the meantime I got and offer from York ( i have not accepted yet ) .

So i am trying to get info about this position ( pro , cons , stress , etc ) so i can compare it to the York ROC ( where i should eventually work ) .

I live in London so it's quite near .

I am surprised the RMT agreed to the SSM working a workstation and the back desk at the same time. It has to be one or the other surely.

One small correction - worked by the panel 1 signaller.
