A career as a signaller

Down South yes.

Regards the other question, I can see it from the LOMs point of view.

“You” invest a significant sum of money into a new signaller recruitment, training etc then within a year their applying for a new job so you have to start the process again. Especially if the signaller is leaving your patch.

But from a signallers viewpoint your nothing but a number to 99% of LOMs so why not apply for higher grade jobs?
Some LOMs will actively encourage you to apply for new higher grade jobs, don’t get me wrong but they won’t thank you if your day one andappgirn for a higher grade job or you’ve been offered a job by them and then take a higher grade before you actually start.
That's fair enough. I have a habit of always looking ahead and trying for the step after next. I'll probably look to spend time learning the job before transferring. Just didn't want to miss an opportunity if they were hard to come by and then regret it later down the line

If you are successfull in getting a signaller job, then apply for another I assume you don't have to do any further tests? Is it just CV and an interview?

Im like that mate, never stop looking to progress - nothing worse than looking back at 65 and wishing you’d done more with your life.

The only situation you’ll do more tests is if you attain signaller grade 1 (crossing keeper) or Crossing Keeper grade 2.

Altjough ive known CK G2 go straight to interview without further tests.

Once your a signaller you’ll no longer be required to test further, just attain the require points for interview via the app.

Thanks. Can you explain the points via app bit a little more please.

My understanding you need to score so many points graded against a matrix to get an interview. Again at interview you need go get X points against a overall minimum pass mark to be considered for appointment.

Finally got all my confirmation required ready to start on 4th Jan I'm super excited. Slightly nervous about going back into learning very different to what I was doing before. Start signal school 10th Jan in Bristol. I was wondering if anyone knew what hotels NR use? And how they provide our meals I.e. From hotel or on site at training centre? Just being nosey before I go
The hotels used can vary, but you will be in the same one for the whole course. One of the supplementary challenges of the course is not putting on too much weight! Breakfast is provided at the hotel, lunch (ordered on arrival each day) is provided at the training centre and you have an allowance (£25 per night for my course last year) for dinner at the hotel.

The setup at Parkway is really good, but much smaller than many of the other larger training centres, with just one each of AB & TC. The two resident instructors are excellent and will do all they can to help you through the course. While it’s a given that you have to work hard, the best advice I would say is to get as much time on the sim as you can. It not only puts you in a good position for the practical assessments, but also is a great help with understanding the processes involved.

Have Fun!

Speak to your LOM about your £25 nightly allowance. Hotel food can get boring after a while. Most LOM's will let you eat out but you will need to submit your receipts to claim your money back.

You can also use your £25 on the Sunday, not just Monday to Friday but keep your receipts to claim the money back.

Thank you

I had to go away training for my last job and I am a bit of a learning geek. So really looking forward to getting back into learning again.

Hi Both,

My main advice is focus on examples of times you have used your non technical skills use the STAR method for your answers maybe research into network rail what they do future projects etc why you want to be a signaller career aspects, the 10 life savings rules, & the safety vision.

They use a selection of hotels, park inn, marriott and hilton were the ones I was in..... ill be interested if you keep up with the gym, I found I had absolutely no time to and ended up gaining a nice solid stone.

Ahh I see. I probably will do. I'll either go very early or very late. The gym is my sanity and stops me murdering stupid people.

I imagine I will yes lol. I'll probably go early in the morning to be honest. I've changed my life in the last 6 months so I don't want it to slip. I'm a pretty good sponge for information though so hopefully I cope well. Was it a big mix of people on the training? Men women old young? Did you socialise outside of training like dinner?

Can somebody please tell me it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed on day 2 of signalling training.
I think if something is completely new to you lots of new info can make you feel overwhelmed yes

Mine was all blokes and we did alot of socialising which was great but contributed to the weight gain, we rarely ate in the hotel towards the end as the food is pretty naff so went out and claimed for meals.
My advice for anyone starting this course is get prepared to put in the graft after class, the tutors are good though. You are basically learning a completely different language in 10 weeks. Its great fun though.

Yeah its normal, don't stress the course goes in waves, some weeks there is not alot of content and others it is death by powerpoint.

All blokes suits me. It's the kind of background I come from. I'm looking forward to it. I've already been told you need to put the effort in outside of class so prepared for that

Thanks for that, don’t wanna put too much pressure on myself, went on the sim today, moving trains around but not really understanding, just pressing haha! What’s your advice about weekend stays? Did you do it much?
