27th May in York for my assessment.

My last interview was on teams with questions on the Non Technical Skills.

I presume this will be pretty much the same, just face to face instead?

Yes. Along side a practical role play scenario. Assuming you are G2

Hi All

I have some questions around the salary and also OT.

With the basic salary does that include any night works and weekends, or is there an allowance for that?

And with the OT, can that be requested or do you just get asked when it’s available?

The salary is just basic without any night allowance or Sundays so depending on where you're going you could be earning more than the basic just through your allocated shifts.

As for overtime you'll get asked through the draft roster or the roster clark will contact you if you're available for x shift and you can either confirm you're available for it or not

Had my interview yesterday for G2, completely forgot to ask when I should expect to hear back, I haven’t heard anything back today, what was everyone’s time frame? I’ve seen a real mixture of times

Hey guys,

First time poster here, I've been trawling through this thread for my last two night shifts, starting to get a good idea of what could lie ahead of me if all goes well..

I've applied for the Cardiff ROC as a G7 signaller.

I have a few questions if anyone can shed any light please?

I'm doing my video interview tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had any tips?

Can anyone shed any light on what a realistic G7 annual/monthly take home pay actually looks like? From what I can see on here even G4 are taking home 50k+ and I'm definitely not shy of the odd overtime shift

Also, how long does it usually take to get signed off on location as a G7? Does it take the full year or can it be done sooner?

Sorry for all the questions

From arriving at your location to being signed off to work all three workstations it’ll be anywhere from 12-18 months - a fair few qualified signallers aren’t training anymore so you’ll find you’ll have days where you can’t actually train on a workstation.

Depending on which link you are allocated (resident or relief) will depend on how much annually you’ll earn, the resident link is very poor which little opportunity for RDW. Whereas the relief link is a standard three day per week pattern which has massive opportunity to earn. Most if not all relief signallers are doing 100+, but max sure you pay maximum voluntary pension contributions if so you don’t fall into the super tax trap at £100,001.

Also for this role where would be the location for the IST be realistically is Westwood in Coventry still offering this training?
It would depend on how quickly your LOM will want you through IST and the availability of courses.

You don't necessarily do IST in an area that is close to either yourself or the box location. People in my location attended IST in Milton Keynes, Walsall, York and one even attended IST in Scotland. I want to say there's also IST courses in either Bristol or Basingstoke as we had some people from Wales on my course who couldn't get into a course down there due to not enough spaces so had to travel up to Milton Keynes every Sunday.

I've attached the current payscale sheet. For a Grade 6 the Sunday pay would be:
  • 12hr Sunday day £458.59
  • 12hr Sunday night £440.76 + Night allowance £20.38
Remember, Sundays are outside of the working week, but do attract that slightly enhanced pay rate.

This is very helpful so thank you.

So just to confirm you get the monthly regardless of what shifts you work. And then on top of your monthly you’ll get extra for however many Sunday shifts you work and also extra for any night shifts you work?

Thanks a lot.

I wasn’t aware of this when I applied so this is definitely a bonus. Fingers crossed I get the nod even more now
You're welcome. For example, my base roster is 8h 30m. I am base rostered for four days most weeks, and a couple of five day weeks. So on a four day flat week I'm being paid for time I'm not at work. Obviously, it isn't so straightforward, as the hours are averaged out over the week.

Note: this may not quite be the same for those on different base rosters.

Hi all, I've recently been offered a position. It's for 'grade 2 trainee signaller in east coast north area' - What does this mean exactly? Will I be assigned a box during/after IST? Am I being employed as a relief? Will I have to apply for box vacancies whilst at IST, like a few others on this thread have said?

Also wondering if anyone else is starting IST in Perth on 4th August?

Thanks :)

East Coast North covers the boxes from Carnoustie to Carmont, as a trainee you'll fit in to a slot likely during or shortly after training. As roles appear, these can be residents or relief, they'll be advertised internally which you can apply for, if nobody else goes for them you'll generally get it without an interview.

Did you have an actual interview or was it the video assessment as part of application? The deadline for applications online says 29th of May
