Can anyone give me some feedback on reading west and what it's like for freight and best days and times to go please.

Potentially busy most days - have a look at RealTimeTrains (I used Tuesday the 10th as an example):

Most of the freight also goes through Tilehurst, plus you get GWR HSTs and a nicer rural setting there.

You would miss the Class 59's that head to Acton if you went to Tilehurst.
