Abandoned wagons/carriages

Sometimes wagons are just left in sidings for years or sometimes decades to slowly rust, for example there was a train of wagons in a siding in Neasden for over 20 years until suddenly one day they disappeared. Are they left there because it’s too much hassle to scrap them or are they just forgotten about?
