I am keen to find a well-priced First Class VTEC fare on Aberdeen Glasgow (via Edinburgh). I have searched here because I thought it might be a common question but I could not find any ideas.

This would be for Monday 10th July and I do not see any advance fares.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated-as always.

As far as I'm aware, you'd have to buy two Advances, split at Edinburgh; the first on a Southbound service and the second on what's effectively a Northbound one to Glasgow.

BR Fares doesn't list an Aberdeen to Glasgow East Coast advance fare, other than a legacy one for Rewards redemptions.

There's only one East Coast service to Glasgow Central per day, and on Monday 10th you'd have three hours' wait for it at Edinburgh, having come off the 14:52 East Coast departure from Aberdeen.

The Glasgow to Edinburgh train time is about 55 mins, but to Aberdeen it's 3 hours, so you could just get CrossCountry or Scotrail to Edinburgh and then VTEC for the 3 hour journey. Unless of course you want to do the whole route VTEC but that would be complicated

I see I have cause confusion by omitting a crucial detail . I should have pointed that I expected to take SR on EDB-GLQ. I was hoping there might be a split somewhere on the way down to Edinburgh where I would have two advances by way of Aberdeen-xxx and then xxx-GLQ, I don't want to make the EDB-GLQ a separate purchase and is expensive but good value as a "free" add on.

It would need to be south of Leuchars. Since you'd be coming off the VTEC train using Advances that only really leaves Inverkeithing or Kirkaldy. I'm not seeing any Advance tickets either so you'd be better off just getting an Any Permitted ticket.

Can I just confirm what you want to do. Take the 14.52 EC service from Aberdeen and change at Edinburgh onto a Glasgow service? And travel in first class?

TrainSplit v2 finds a suitable split for tomorrow:

https://new.trainsplit.com/default....7094190&OutboundDate=100717&OutboundTime=1430

Make sure that you have "First Class" and "Fixed Time" modes enabled.

You could buy the tickets separately if you only wanted first class as far as Haymarket.

This is right. It's also a lot cheaper than the direct service on SR and more comfortable.

Thank you all for the great advice.

Another option could be to get the EC service as far as Haymarket (£28), then a XC Anytime day single 1st class (£13.40) from Haymarket to Glasgow central. The XC services, though more comfortable than Scotrail, are only every two hrs so may involve a long wait, plus annoyingly very few of their services actually have catering.

In future, if you book way in advance, you can get Scotrail advance 1st class tickets between Aberdeen and Glasgow. Currently, the tickets appear to start from £10 with a max of 2 seats per train at this price as far as I can tell. Scotrail have said they are to introduce £7.50 1st class tickets in the future, possibly once the HSTs arrive. The Aberdeen to Glasgow advance tickets can be routed via Edinburgh too. Currently, Scotrail 1st class is not a patch on EC but hopefully once the HSTs are introduced the 1st class offering should be greatly improved.

If you're not tight on time and are looking to travel in maximum comfort, I'd suggest getting the 18:18 Leeds service, which arrives into Edinburgh at 21:00. At 21:14, there's the XC HST service for Glasgow Central. At this time of year, it'll still be light outside to catch in the views.

Not sure about the prices but I can imagine they'd be similar to those highlighted already.
