So recently I’ve been fascinated by Enviro400s, but I’ve been so frustrated when I come to try and distinguish between variants:
ADL E40D
ADL E40H
ADL x BYD E400EV
Scania Enviro400

So what I managed to distinguish out will be the Scania, due to their long rear parts overhanging; however, I’ve been trying to look at the positions of the vents but found out they may be of different style and at different position (say a 57-plate E40D vs a 60-plate E40D)

Another method I’ve been trying is looking at the axle. What I heard was for the pre-MMC versions, all of them use Dana axle; but after that, ZF-axle have been used on Diesel version and Dana axle for hybrid version. However, I’ve managed to see ZF-axle on pre-MMC and Dana axle on E40D MMC !!

God all these are so frustrating, and please would anyone teach me how to read the VIN codes of the Enviro400 series? Thanks a lot mates!!

ADL E400 is a body, as fitted to other chassis such as Scanias.
ADL E40D are diesel models
ADL E40H are hybrids.
BYDs with ADL E400 bodies are electronic buses.
The FCEV variant is hydrogen version. Merseyside is still waiting for 20 such which originally were 22-plate!

However Stagecoach s 115xx and 116xx are classed as E40D yet they are supposed to be hybrid. That is where the confusion lies.

God there is still a hydrogen variant!

What I wanted to do was to identify each model from their exterior. Yet it is a really confusing task.

You haven't yet mentioned varying lengths - 10.2, 10.6, 11+m (and yes these dimensions vary slightly over time depending on the age and model).

Self correction - 10.6 should be more like 10.9m.

Scania Enviro 400 has no lower rear window & has more half windows compared to normal.

Enviro 400 Hybrid have the rear upstairs seats further forward compared to normal with a box for the batteries behind it, the rear blind is also in a different place on the upper panels rather than around the window. This is due to the normal placing being where the batteries are. There are also additional vents on rear panel’s between windows due to the batteries.

Older Enviro 400 on a Trident chassis has the rear side radiator grille on the near side, the more newer ones after 59 plate are on the offside.
After 12/62 plate the Enviro 400 lost the offside lower half window, the registration plate went to the rear bumper area rather than above the lower window with the rear blind relocated to a central position above the rear window.

The top deck rear window changed from a rounded shape to a standard rectangle quite early on too.

Please correct me if I’m wrong (as I’m not 100% sure myself) but the diesel, ADL-chassis Enviro 400s produced until 2006/7 are more-or-less facelifted ALX400 Tridents with the same chassis and engine, and the ones from 2007 to 2009 use an amended Trident chassis with 6.7 litre Euro 4 engine (which uses AdBlue so there's an extra filler flap on the offside). These both have the radiator on the nearside.
Then from later in 2009 the new E40D chassis came in with a Euro 5 engine, and the radiator moved to the offside.

The E40H hybrid has an engine grille on both sides, I think. Some hybrids appear to have a hexagonal pattern in the grille, but not all?

Yes Lothian has a sizeable number of them.
Stagecoach in London had a few as well (not my photo)

Also, there's the original E400 body
The "replacement" E400MMC
And the E400 City which incorporates a few styling features of the London New Routemaster

The E400 BYD electric buses have the E400 City bodywork, the B5LH above is E400MMC bodywork

To further add to the confusion there are lots of Enviro 400 City hybrids as well as the Enviro 400 MMC hybrids

Also not forgetting the MAN E400s that Stagecoach Manchester had until recently before they were transferred out

I don't think they look difference from the other E400 Scanias, but Reading Bus has gas powered examples

I believe Stagecoach West Scotland have E400 Scanias. They sit higher up.

Why is there E400 MMC and E400 City?

Always found it odd that only one E400 was ever built on the B7TL chassis.

I've used the East Yorkshire Volvo B9TL E400s in the past and it's always strange to be on an Enviro400 that sounds like it should be a Wright Gemini!

Woah that’s really detailed guide! Thanks a lot!

PS. Mind if I ask whether you were from Hong Kong?

From what I read, E400City was to compete with the then dominating Borismaster in London. That’s why the early ones were only available in London. Not sure if there is someone outside London possessing hybrid versions of E400MMC though

I am from Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

Why is there E400 MMC and E400 City?
The E400 City which Blackpool Transport has a sizeable fleet of has a part glass staircase & panelling which goes to the top of the upstairs windows. The E400MMC does not have this feature. The E400 City front end is also more rounded particularly the bottom of the front windscreen.
