Is it me or is it hard work trying to get on the railway as a operative?
I’ve applied for 10 operative rolls with NWR some are up to 2 hours commute one way from my address. 7 have come back with me not even getting to the interview stage. I’ve have experience in groundwork and a time
Served bricklayer before joining the army so I have labour intensive and safety critical experience which they are looking for. I’ve also signed up to agency’s

I’m wondering if anybody can give me advice or point me in the right direction with helping me start my new career in civviy street.
Thanks

You’ll more than likely not get anywhere with commute times in excess of an hour each way as a rule.

It is a very difficult industry to get in to and a lot of the time it’s just down to perseverance as there are so many people applying for often just one or two posts. NWR did have a scheme a year or so ago aimed at former armed forces personnel so get them in to work outside the military. I’m not sure if they still have a scheme like this?

I’d also recommend having your CV in tip top conditions and relevant to the roles for which you’re applying. Same goes for a cover letter. You don’t always need to submit these, but I know NWR do require it a lot of the time.

Good luck, you’ll get there eventually!

Your travelling distance is too far. They won’t entertain anything over an hours travel. Some tocs won’t go over 45 mins. Is there nothing more local to you?
Have you thought about joining in a different grade? A lot of drivers at my place started as carriage cleaners.

Did you specialise in the Army? Does that have any good transferable skills (driving / logistics / signals etc.). Why just NR - there are civils contractors, survey companies and plant hire specialists as well.
I was armoured reconnaissance buddy. Have you got a list of some company names of civil contractors survey companies etc off the top of your head? I’ve applied with a lot of agencies but haven’t had much luck.
