This little story is perfect for this forum as by and large children are seen as untouchable and never ever in the wrong under any circumstances whatsoever. This is largely because the forum is dominated by children.

Having seen this post from Steveman in the thread about the pensioner manhandling an 11 year old on a train, I started wondering about the age of forumgoers and whether or not the forum really is dominated by children.

P.s. If the mods object to the non-anon nature of the poll then they can change it.

The age of somebody shouldn't dictate or change the way the forum is run or perceived by people. Clearly the forum caters for all people who have an interest in railways regardless of age and if people don't like the fact there are younger people on the forum then they can always ignore or leave the forum.

You forgot your poll, and make it an anonymous one while I remember.

I've added mine;. I expect to see a simple majority of 20-30 posters as they're more likely to be au fait with the internet pretty much growing up with it.

With just 1 out of 52 responses so far being for any age category that could be described as "child", it's fair to say that the forum is not dominated by children.

(I define "child" as under the age of thirteen, although under the age of sixteen if we're talking about "not an adult" which is clearly the intention in this instance).

I suspect Steveman was probably calling us immature.

The question "how old are you?" is invalid, as the nature of spacetime is such that time is affected by differences in either gravity or velocity. Time is relative and so the age of a person is entirely dependent on the perspective of the observer.

That was my argument anyway, but the RPI still made me pay for an adult ticket.

That reminds me of a story I heard about a passenger on the Harborne railway, not known for high speed services to say the least. He was an old man with white hair and a beard but was in possession of a child's ticket. When question, he said that he had been a child when he had boarded the train.

And that reminds me of the inevitable joke whenever there's a news story about a baby being born on a train (which of course happens from time to time). Usually something along the lines of the baby being given a penalty fare (not something that would apply, but why let facts get in the way, eh?) Or that the mother reports that when she boarded the train, she wasn't even pregnant!:roll: (not sure which smiley is most appropriate!).

The RPI probably understood that the 'perspective of the observer' thing doesn't matter: You can still - in theory - measure the time using a clock that stays with you through your life (technically known as your 'proper time'). And that time doesn't depend on the observer, so it will accurately measure your age. No doubt the RPI figured that your proper time since birth is big enough that you still need an adult ticket :)

And the Lady in the USA who went to the conductor to say "How long is this delay likely to be? You see, I'm pregnant"
"If you've been pregnant that long you shouldn't be on this train."
She replied: "I wasn't pregnant when I boarded!"

There's always the good old alliterative thing, "for kids of all ages from nine to ninety". (I'm about to turn 68, by the way.)

It would be good if the mods could check the vote for 5-10 and see if it's genuine!

And then implement a minimum age in line with other social media, and retrospective implementation for those voted younger

I'm curious to know why there isn't a category for the under five's? There are plenty of children under the age of five who simply adore trains.
