The Airedale and Wharfedale lines are intensively used with a number of flat junctions and single line sections. There appeared to be some difficulties fitting stopping patterns in when Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall first opened. More services will be added when LNER running regular 2-hourly trains to Bradford. With the success of Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall stations, there may also be a case for a new park and ride station where the line crosses the ring road at Calverley (alluded to in the 2014 West Yorkshire new stations study). Is it actually possible to do this given the timetable is already pretty heavily constrained?

You mean a new station between Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall? Is it really necessary?

From the 2014 West Yorks stations study:
The site at Calverley would appear to be attractive as a park and ride site and no significant
construction issues were identified. Given its location between the planned stations at Kirkstall
Forge and Apperley Bridge, it is recommended that this site is reassessed once travel patterns at
the two new stations are understood.

I understand the new stations have exceeded their initial growth estimates, so based on the recommendation above this brings Calverley into play. A Park and Ride site right by the ring road is going to be significantly more accessible than Apperley bridge or Kirkstall Forge. The successful bus-based P&R sites at Elland Road and J45 cannot be replicated in North or West Leeds as the roads are too congested, so rail-based options should be considered.

To this we can add that a station here would attract significant usage from the rather isolated Horsforth Vale development and give better provision for parts of Calverley, Rodley and Horsforth.

With the present signalling and careful timetabling you could operate something like
xx00/17 all stations Bradford
xx07/24 Ilkley
xx11 Skipton fast
xx14/27 Skipton slow
but the line would then be at capacity - skip-stopping might be better.
This is the point at which re-quadrupling Armley to Apperley Jn might come in.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to expand New Pudsey railway station and uplift the number of trains/carriages on that route to serve the outer ring road area on this side of Leeds. There are at least three stations within around two miles of the Horsforth Vale development.

In conjunction with Horsforth North station and the new Alwoodley Park and Ride, these should help serve the requirements of west Leeds
