At Thirsk station, I noticed that there is a little white box with a small circular grille with the words 'ambient noise sensor' on it, on the side of the waiting room on platform 2. What purpose does this serve at a station? Am I missing something that should be obvious?

It controls the volume of the announcements, if there is a train in the platform causing a lot of noise (or some very noisy people!) the volume of the announcements is automatically increased.
