Next month; arriving by train from Schiphol; I'm hoping to tap in and tap out; not sure if AS is gated or simply you have to look around for the machine? Looks like a decent number of shops such as Spar to buy a sandwich/drink on the way to my hotel - take it all the shops are "landside"?

Thanks!

What machine? There are gates so it is obvious where you tap in and out. Schiphol doesn't have gates so you have to remember to tap in or out on the post.

Have you considered one of the combined train and public transport tickets?

There is also a direct bus 369 from Schiphol to Sloterdijk if you want to experience a quality electric bus with air conditioning.

There are several shops, take aways etc. in the station and near the station. I think they are all outside the gates, but it doesn't matter if they are inside the gates as if you tap in and out at the same station, there is no charge. This is different to London where you do get charged for doing this.

Thanks; I'm hoping the tap in/out has a daily cap on my credit card?

EDIT - just found out there isn't; so looks like I need an all-day ticket for Tram/train/metro (until 0200 but not using night buses) might buy the three-day ticket from Sloterdijk on my first full day.

You might be better off with a combined ticket including return train travel and unlimited travel around the city for 1, 2 or 3 days

Are you visiting Amsterdam for a day or two and will arrive via Schiphol Airport? This ticket will suit your plans.

The Amsterdam Travel Ticket provides unlimited travel on the train (NS railway), the Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397) and Niteliner N97 (of Connexxion) between Schiphol and Amsterdam and unlimited travel for all GVB trams, day buses, night buses and metros. So, you can arrange all of your travel needs in one go.

Or if you are travelling a lot in the wider region there is the

It's the perfect ticket for a visit to Amsterdam and places like Volendam, the historic Zaanse Schans or Haarlem.

Where can you travel:

Unlimited travel on the bus, tram, train and metro throughout Amsterdam and the region

When can you travel:

1, 2 or 3 calendar days (day and night)

With which transport companies:

GVB, Connexxion, EBS, NS

There are some within the gates AFAIK, but enough outside as well.
Amsterdam Sloterdijk is a really complicated station with respect to gates as the Zaandam platforms are behind a different gateline than the Haarlem ones (but you can walk between them via the high level platforms).
And the direct Schiphol - Zaandam trains have an entirely seperate station (platform 9-10) along the fly over.

Only when staying within the gates less than 60 minutes however!

If the Spar outside the station (south side) doesn't have what you need, there's a decent sized Lidl not far away. Google maps will find it for you (Sara Burgerhartstraat 80, 1055 LD Amsterdam, Netherlands).

Very useful though when you think you're showing a ticket on your phone screen and the barrier reads a card via NFC instead.

That's exactly why E-tickets are only allowed printed or loaded in the NS-app, due to the gate design reading a barcode might trigger reading a card. But the NS-app (and Interrail-app) do suppress NFC to avoid this problem. Doesn't work with the DB Navigator etc. however.

I have that app so I hope to use it for the airport to Sloterdijk and from Sloterdijk to Haarlem (ret); Zandvoort and, indeed, Amsterdam Centraal with separate trips.
