.... completely different! (or at least more than a little different!) (with apologies to Monty Python)

I have recently updated both my homepage, and the associated fotopic collections.

I should warn you, it is not modern traction - but do not let that put you off. I hope that you will find something to catch your eye.

One of the current projects is rebuilding a coke-fired horse-drawn chip van, for Beamish Museum. (yes, you did read that!)

Please visit and have a look around. I try to update the sites fairly often, as some of our projects take a while to complete.
Leave a comment if you want, here or there!

Regards,
StoneRoad

I have added some more shots of the work on Beamish's Bread Van, and a couple of other images as well - but no prizes for spotting them (sorry!)

Very interesting stuff. I've always wished I was more practical - it's good to see someone who is actually involved in the restoration of some of the less publicised aspects of historical preservation.

Hi,

I've done some more updates to both my homepage and the associated image collections. (and there are some more to do in the next few days!)

The Bread Van has gone back to Beamish Museum, just in time for their "Power from the Past" event.;)

Thanks for looking!

It's that time again!

Just done some updates to my home page and the image collections.
Most of the projects are long term, and with a small team it often looks as though nothing has been happening, until a lot of previously machined timber is built up into something.

The Chip Van progress has been like that - we are now at the trial build stage, so there is something to show!
One or two other changes have been made recently, as well.

Thanks for looking, if you click on the thumbnails, then I get to know what is popular!

Hi there,

It has been a busy week or so in the works, mainly on the Chip Van. Some more images to give an idea of progress have been added.
Also, a few extra shots have been included in other collections to show developments.

Thanks for looking!

Really starting from late July.

We have continued to work on NER70, and a couple more "backdated" images have also been added recently.

The metal cladding for the Chip Van arrived a few days ago, and we have now had a dry fit. Some progress has been made with the wheels and various other bits + bobs have come back from bead blasting. When the paint is delivered the next stage can begin.....

During the coming week or two, further work will be carried out on the Miller. There should be some images of the results to post quite soon.

Thanks for looking/clicking!

Take Care

Greetings from the North - it is now raining and somewhat windy....

I have just finished updating the fotopic collections, mainly showing the recent work done on cladding the bodywork of the Chip Van, and a range of other tasks such as the repairs and painting of the wheels.
Although we have been working on NER70 and the Miller as well, the best images of the progress we have made are not quite ready to be posted, so I'm sorry, but a further wait is in order.;)
As usual, there are two or three ‘backdated’ shots in other collections, as well.

You are welcome to have a look around at some of our previous work, as we have done quite a range of projects.

Enjoy your visit!

In the last week or so I have done several small updates to the fotopic collections, mainly to the Berriman's Chip Van, the Miller Fifer and NER70.

In addition, I have updated my home page and created a new fotopic collection as there is a new project underway. More details to follow, but there are only a couple of images posted so far.

Thanks for looking

Greetings, one and all:

Over the last few days I have updated several fotopic collections, to record the progress of various projects. The Index page is in my signature, scroll down for the collections.
We have been concentrating on the Berriman’s Chip Van, which since the replacement springs finally arrived, has now been re-wheeled. The next major job was test-firing the range, with the predictable result being very tasty!
Final assembly, which will take place shortly, and then the painting of the top coats, are the *only* matters still outstanding.
Other projects that have seen further work recently are NER70, and the Miller Fifer refit.
Additionally, I have posted a couple of extra images for the Saltburn Cliff Lift, and one or two other collections have gained more pictures, as I have been (slowly) sorting out and indexing the photographic records, no doubt there will be some further *lost* images to be found!

Thanks for looking and thumbnail clicking!

How y’all doin’?

I had intended doing this update during the last few days in October, as a couple of things were about to happen I was persuaded to put off doing it for a few days, but now I can reveal some of the recent developments.

Progress is being made on NER70, and although the work is not very photogenic, ;) some more images should be available shortly.
The collection for the Miller Fifer has shown a few changes, mainly to do with the wheelhouse, which has a new roof.
Berriman’s Chip Van has been quite a convoluted saga! A further visit from the film unit has taken place recently. After the efforts over the last few days, the rebuild is effectively complete, and the only remaining work is in connection with finishing off the finer points of the paintwork.
As usual, I’ve managed to add a couple of “backdated” images.
The biggest news  has been the arrival at our workshops of the passenger cars from the Saltburn Cliff Lift / funicular / tramway. Currently, they are undergoing some exploratory surgery! Watch this space for more news…….

That’s all for now, folks.
Thanks for looking, and clicking thumbnails!

Are you sitting in a warm and comfortable manner? then I’ll begin….

I had intended doing this update during the last few days in December, but as a few things were about due to happen, I let myself be persuaded to put off doing it for a little bit longer. As some of these have now been completed, I can reveal some of the recent developments. This is a summary of several recent updates, done in the last few days, and an indication of some future updates.

NER70 has had a little more work, and although it is not very photogenic at this stage, a couple of images have been posted.

Berriman’s Chip Van has, at last, been collected by Webster’s and should shortly be on display at Beamish. Hopefully, a few more images will become available once the Chip Shop itself is finished.

Saltburn Cliff Lift
After the exploratory investigations, it was decided that the best plan would be to completely rebuild the one car, whilst the other received the matching “victorianisation” as planned, during its own refurbishment. Some images have already been posted, and a few extra will be put up quite soon to show progress.

The workshop fore-dog has taken early(?) retirement, and to mark his promotion to chair-dog he now has his own collection, which will be updated as I find the images.

The recent weather has allowed me to add some good shots; the hoar frost was most impressive. :o

As usual, I’ve managed to add a couple of “backdated” images, to various collections.

That’s all for now, folks. If all goes according to plan, I should have some additional images to post very soon.

Thanks for showing your interest - by clicking thumbnails!
(You may have to wait a moment, or two, for some of the images to load)

Greetings, one and all:

Over the past two days I have updated several fotopic collections, to record the progress of various projects. The Index page is in my signature; scroll down for links to the collections.

Most of the recent work has concentrated on the Saltburn Cliff Lift. The car we are re-building has now begun to take shape, and we are starting the work on the components for the “Victorianisation” of both cars. There is still a lot of work to do before Easter……

http://stanegaterestorationsandreplicas.fotopic.net/p68943159.html

At the end of last year we built two additional Pullman style armchairs for our first export order. The buyers have just collected them, as they wanted to meet Harry. It would seem that the chairdog lived up to the title, as it was his presence that made the sale. There will be a suitable bonus in his “paypacket” as a result.

As I have continued (slowly) sorting out and indexing the photographic records, one or two collections have gained a few extra pictures - no doubt there will be some further *lost* images to be found!

Thanks for looking and thumbnail clicking!

As a result of the sudden, and unexplained, disappearance of fotopic on the 9th March 2011, a small selection from the 800+ images – from two galleries – are now hosted on flickr.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/sets/

Currently there are two sets for current work (Saltburn Cliff Lift and the Miller Fifer), and a further eleven sets for past projects.

As yet; the image titles, tags and captions (descriptions) are still a work in progress, and I will be adding others shortly.

Currently there are three sets for current work (Saltburn Cliff Lift, NER 70 and the Miller Fifer), a further seventeen sets for past projects and another six sets covering other subjects.
As yet; the image titles, tags and captions (descriptions) are still a work in progress, and I will be adding others shortly – as and when I find them!

The concentration of our efforts on the Saltburn Cliff Lift project had meant that work on other aspects had been postponed until the lift was re-opened to the public on 22nd April 2011. As that milestone has now been successfully passed, we can extend our attention to other matters, including updating websites, including flickr.

Recent flickr updates include the cliff lift:

And further uploads of material that was previously on fotopic.

Thanks for looking – please explore my photostream, and click on some images!

Over the last few days, I have been able to spend time sorting out images and I have retrieved about 150 images that I thought had disappeared into the ether. These have been uploaded to the Flickr account, and I have titled, captioned and tagged them. This brings me up to just over 700 images, and I hope that I have got all the important ones – if I find any more lurking around…….

Currently there are three sets for current work (which includes the Saltburn Cliff Lift, NER 70, and the Miller Fifer), a further twenty-two sets for twenty-eight past projects, and another six sets for additional images. This covers the wide range of projects carried out in the period from October 2006 to the present time.

As we are starting some new projects in the very near future, I will add sets for them as soon as I have the images.....

To help find the most recently uploaded images within the sets - I have added *New* to the title of the extra sets, and *Updated* to those sets with additional images. These notations will remain posted for about ten days or so.

As my photostream displays in the order of uploading, and I am adding images as I locate them, the image chronolgical order does not match......please note that some of the EXIF dates are very wrong, even some from the camera with the currently right date! This will be attended to shortly…..

Thanks for looking – please explore my sets and photostream, and click on some images! Then I’ll know what is popular (or not!)

Mid – May Updates.

Just dropped by to post that since I have re-uploaded almost all the images, at last I have been able to revise all the links on my ‘homepage’ website. As a by-product of that I have reworked the current and past project pages. No doubt there will be a few more amendments and lost images to find and sort out……

Recent updates are mainly to the flickr site, although there have been a couple of minor edits to my homepage. There are still a few changes to make, but some more details are needed before that can be done.
Most of the new images are to the NER70 and Miller Fifer sets, with a few others as well. Also a new set “Steel Underframe” has been added - these images have just recently been supplied by the people who fabricated the WHHR underframes some years ago.

Thanks for looking – please explore, and click on some images! Please comment, here or there, if you want.

Flickr updates start of June 2011

I have posted a few extra images to NER70 and the Miller Fifer sets to show current progress, and added to the 1001 things to restore set. There should be more new progress to show shortly.

Flickr updates early June 2011

Yesterday I posted some more images of current progress with the NER70 restoration; and a few of the Chip Van taken during the recent visit to Spennymoor. I will also have a link to a short video filmed during the event to post quite soon. There are some additional images of model furniture and I’ve replaced one tiny image of the B5 traction engine with a slightly better one.

Enjoy! The link is in my signature.

Flickr updates in the last days of June 2011

Over the couple of days I have been adding images to my photostream. The main area of attention during the past week or so has been the building of the Aveling & Porter awning (or canopy) although work is still progressing on the Miller and NER70.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/5882753112/in/photostream

There is a new set “Film Units” which will include most of the various teams who have visited the workshop to watch us at work, as well as filming coverage of some of our products at work. I hope to be adding more to this shortly.
Additionally, I have posted a few more “backdated” images – this process is almost complete as there are now only a few still missing, as I have looked in most of the usual places.
Unfortunately, the unveiling of our major new work project has had to be postponed for a little while; I am hoping to do so during July, so watch this space – as they say!

The link in my signature will take you to my “sets” page, so please enjoy exploring….
Thanks for looking

Early July Updates

I have just updated my homepage as the go-ahead has just been given for our newest project, the restoration – for operation on the Pockerley Waggonway – of the Forcett Coach; otherwise known as Stockton & Darlington No.179. Technically this is third class, but it was part of a rake of carriages, built for market day services and is rather basic. The link is to a sample image in the set for this project:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/5916103562/in/set-72157627139592710

Work is progressing nicely on the other projects – that is; the Aveling & Porter steam roller awning, NER70 and the Miller Fifer. Several updates for these should be added quite soon, as I want to make sure that I have the best images of the recent work to upload.

Thanks for looking, and please enjoy exploring my photostream…..

Mid July Updates

I have just dropped by to say that most of the extra images promised last time have now been uploaded to the sets for current projects. Also, we were invited to the official opening of Davy’s Coal-fired chip shop at Beamish on the 14th July, and took some pictures of the proceedings. http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/5941419114/in/photostream

I invite you to have a look around my flickr site……

Late July Updates - 20th July 2011

Yesterday I added a few more images of current work, to keep things up to date. In a couple of days I shall be able to do the same again, as the various projects are progressing! When we took up the floorboards, we found a minor problem with the Forcett coach……

For a number of reasons I have not posted about recent additions to my flickr photostream since 2011 July 21. However, several updates had been made between then (19/7/11) and now (11/10/11) totaling 47 images. Projects covered by these are Miller Fifer, the Forcett Coach and the Aveling and Porter stream roller canopy. As sometimes happens, a few images from further back in time have also been uploaded. This means I am spoilt for choice of an image to linkback ! So I’ll have several!
Miller Fifer: http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6214820174/in/photostream
Forcett : http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6214822406/in/photostream
A&P : http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6128453470/in/photostream/

Please enjoy a meander into my photostream, have a click, comment or even select a favourite. I have added some galleries as well, these have other peoples images…..

Start of December 2011 UPDATES:

Although I have been adding to my flickr during November, for various reasons I have not posted much anywhere since Mid-October despite uploading approaching 150 images. However, quite a major part of these recent uploads have been largely un-related to normal work subjects – there have been quite a significant number of images related to Ben and Harry (the set descriptions will explain the details……)

Ben: http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6401597235/in/set-72157628026767272

Harry:httphttp://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6302393891/in/set-72157626352469738

Hopefully service should be back to normal now, and we are waiting to get on with some new work. In the meantime, work is continuing on the Miller Fifer, NER70 and the Forcett Coach.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6401511465/in/set-72157627139592710 for a sample.

If you would like a little light reading, try the December 2011 issue of “Old Glory” – it has an illustrated article profiling Stanegate Restorations and Replicas.

Please - enjoy a meander into my photostream, have a click, add a comment or maybe select a favourite (or several). I have added some galleries as well; these have other peoples’ images…..
Thanks for looking.

If I haven’t already - With very best wishes for the coming year, sorry if they are a little late !

Since my last updates, in mid December, I have been posting images to the flickr account. Over the past weekend I added something in the region of 30. Some have been work-related, but a few others are not and others are retrievals from the ether or are scanned photographs. Apologies if some of the latter are a little grainy or a little different in colour balance……
For the work images, most are for the Miller and the Forcett Coach. (a few more are of Ben)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6654758399/in/photostream
http://www.flickr.com/photos/60884630@N06/6654543731/in/photostream

If you visit the sets index page, the *new* and *updated* markers are in the appropriate set titles, as yet I have not added markers to the images themselves.

As I have mentioned before - If you would like a little light reading, try the December 2011 issue of “Old Glory” – it has an illustrated article profiling Stanegate Restorations and Replicas. This gives a very good summary of recent projects……

Please – feel free to dip into my photostream, have a click, if you are a flickr member – you will be able add a comment or maybe even select a favourite (or several). I have added some galleries as well; these have other peoples’ images…..
Thanks for looking.
