Hello,

Hopefully you can help me. My flight from Portugal is delayed by 3 hours this evening and is now due to arrive at 01:15.

I have an anytime day single from Gatwick to Chatham dated today. Am I right in thinking, based on the National Rail website, that as long as I start my journey by 04:29 then I will be able to use this ticket?

I am hoping to travel on the following:
- 0254 GTW to VIC
- 0740 VIC to CTM

Thanks!

Unfortunately, the ticket validity is to complete the journey by 04:29, rather than start. Therefore you can use it to Victoria but will need a new ticket to Chatham. It is probably better to get a new ticket for tomorrow and refund the one you have already bought.

The published conditions state:

6.1 Anytime Day (Single and Return) tickets must be used on the date shown on your ticket and up to 04:29 the following day.

So your first leg is fine, but you will either need to purchase a new ticket for the second leg or (potentially) excess from the Anytime Day Single to an Off Peak Return.

Okay, super. Will purchase a new ticket from Victoria to Chatham. Thanks
I think that refunding the ticket you have with an admin fee of £5 and buying a new ticket for the whole journey is, overall, cheaper.

I booked it through Uber as the 10% is great but they are saying it is not possible to have a refund.

Their Web site help contradicts this (https://help.uber.com/riders/articl...n?nodeId=0f3160da-2e7e-4a31-8280-ef20fc1c9aaf):

I need help with my cancellation

UK rail refunds must be requested no later than 28 days after departure. Whilst not all tickets are refundable, you can check your options depending on the fare you selected:
Off-Peak / Super Off-Peak / Anytime fares: These tickets can be refunded through Your Bookings, minus a £5 fee set by the UK rail operators. You will need your booking reference fee to do this.

The note at the bottom of that screenshot suggests that you have to wait a couple of days before asking for the refund (which seems odd, but isn't a refusal).

Presumably to allow for any delayed scans to make it through
Probably but that isn't a good reason for stopping you from applying for the refund - they could simply hold off for a couple of days before paying it. And for the OP's journey there are unlikely to be any scans as it involves a cross-London journey so shouldn't be an eTicket.

Yes, I suspect the inability to request a refund stems from an attempt to comply with RDG guidance which was issued last year, which required ticket retailers not to process e-ticket refunds on the selected day of travel, or the day after that, to allow for any delayed ticket scans to propagate through industry databases.

As @Haywain mentions, this guidance has no relevance to ToD bookings. Uncollected bookings should be able to be cancelled and refunded remotely, and the usual post-Covid procedure for collected tickets is to ask for a picture of the ticket cut diagonally in half (to prevent Delay Repay also being claimed).

Now due into Gatwick at 00:08 so only a two hour delay. I’m going to get an Uber home as I really can’t be bothered with a long journey across London to get back.

Thanks for all your help. I will refund it when the option becomes available.
