The closing date for the Virgin Trains East coast role is June 11th 2016

the closing date for the GWR role is 17th april 2016

I'm gonna end up in a situation where i turn one down

I think you know the answer. Your jumping the gun too quick and I get the impression you have only just applied without getting shifting through the first round yet?

There will be lots of other candidates and you need to spend your time practicing, to demonstrate that you are better qualified for this role. Stay focus and cross your fingers. If you get the chance to be successful and get offended both roles, you could be stuck in a 'talent bank'. Thus the chance of this situation happening are slim.

Also a job interview isn't just for the firm to find the best talent, its also for you to ensure that you wish to work for the employee. Sometimes I feel that I am interviewing my potential employers more than they are testing me sometimes .

Quick question, where are you located to be able to apply for a job at both companies? Are you sure the VTEC role is closing on June 11th?

I live in London so in easy reach of Kings Cross and Paddington...

I'm going through the motions with gwr.. application/English and maths test were successful and i've been emailed to ready myself for a telephone interview which is this wednesday @ 14.00

And yes the closing date for VTEC is June... they have since removed the vacancy from the website, perhaps due to the number of applicants
