Hi I am really interested in becoming a signaller with Network Rail. The closest job to me is for an operative (track maintenance), I've applied for this role in hope that if I have my foot in the door i have a better chance of finding a signalling job which is more local to me. Is it possible to do this as it is something I am really hoping to do? Thanks in advance ;)

There's no reason why you can't BUT look at the Signaller recruitment process first. Its long and drawn out so be sure you'll enjoy the other role if you're successful. Track maintenance needs committed staff.

Thanks for the reply. I am interested in the track maintenance job as I come from a construction background. I was hoping whilst doing this (if successful) I could learn what it takes to be a signaller as it seems a much more complex job I couldn't just apply for and be accepted in my current position.

I wouldn't mind doing the track maintenance job as I come from a construction background but I would much prefer to get in to the signalling side. There was also a position 40 miles from me named Operative (Signalling). I applied to this also as I presumed this was a signalling job on the beginning grade, is this correct? Do you get in house training on pay of successful or do you need the credentials first? Thanks again

The Operative (Signalling) job is not a job as a signaller. It will also be a job on the track but with the S&T (signals and telecoms) department rather than track maintenance/ pway.

Ok great thanks for your reply. I guess I will have to wait for one to come up in my area, and not really be going for jobs to get my foot in the door for internal signalling jobs

The Operative (Signalling) job sounds more appropriate, actually, in helping you understand how the signalling system works so you would be able to use it better.

It would sound like a better position for me but it would mean traveling to Doncaster from hull every day which is a pain but if it means I'm in I can stick with it and maybe re locate eventually.
