I got the impression that you could only apply for Manchester roles? I know it mentions several locations at the start of the advert, but when you go down to the 'apply' bit, it only states Manchester.

Does anyone else agree or am I just being a bit blind?
I spoke to their recruitment team about this exact issue. You cannot change it online but the vacancies are for the depots that are listed in the body of the job advert. Once they have their shortlist they divide them out by depot by postcode that I assume they get from your details.

Ah okay, I'm glad I wasn't the only one with that issue at least!

Dividing up by postcode seems interesting, gives the impression they won't accept relocation then? I had Manchester in mind but live closer to Bournemouth. One to watch I suppose. Thanks for the info :)

Hi all, I'm applying for this position. I've uploaded my CV and on the next bit there's a section to upload references. What exactly is supposed to be put there. Contact information for the references or something that the references have already written?
Usually it’s the details of who you are using - name, address, email address, phone number - but I’ve never applied for XC.

If you look at Glassdoor it has the top salary on there. I think in most depots it goes up in stages but I’m not sure.
I’m fairly sure Avanti, LNER and Eurostar drivers are on quite a bit more, not to say that salary is bad by any stretch.

Which salary are you on about? Avanti are around £2k more & the other two £5-6k more. The ASLEF site tells you salaries for different companies if you google what you’re looking for.

The ASLEF site is out of date in terms of TOC pay scales / terms & conditions. Most of the salaries on there are from a year to two years old. Most of the TOCS actually show on the ASLEF site as last updated 2019 etc.

It's definitely hit and miss.

How many references and what kind do they require?

I’m going to apply for the Birmingham one. Self employed so I’ll need to get hold of some customers who will be referees!

Which salary am I on about? Their annual one! Lol.. Why such an aggressive reply? As I said, I was ‘fairly‘ sure the three I mentioned were on quite a bit more, and if you are saying a couple are £5 or 6k more then this is indeed quite a bit more then Is it not? .. so I was correct. Why would I Google it? Your response would indicate I misquoted a figure of some sort..get a grip pal.

Not being aggressive at all. Your post suggested the salary was low in some way which I found a bit strange abs didn’t know which amount you were looking at. Each company has different salaries. Some more and some less. Salary is not everything. If you’re not happy with what’s on offer then there are other companies you can apply to. £5 or £6k may seem like a lot but there are also terms and conditions to consider which affect daily working life.

Link to the ASLEF company information page:

This suggests that the current basic pay is £65,006 plus some extra cash depending on what time you book on.

As previously mentioned though, salary isn’t everything. If a driver’s job offered £20k with a guarantee of getting qualified, I think it would still be oversubscribed!

Good Luck

I would put two people on there. They can always come back to you if they need anything else. Obviously speak to your customers first and make sure they’re good’uns!

I was self employed and used my accountant and job from 10 years ago if you still have good relationship with an old employer you can use them.

XC, like any TOC, will require you to live within 1hr of the depot as part of the fatigue management/risk index. I don't know how they are with relocations for trainee positions, as they've only very recently started taking trainees.
What’s your excuse then? ;)

It was a reasonable reply, not aggressive at all.
