Hello, I thought I would open up this thread to fill in what seems to be a gap in the market. To my understanding there's a lot of teenagers and twenty somethings on this forum, and may be interested in pursuing a career in the railway industry but not sure how to get in.
I've decided to help those that may be interested by combing together where I have found TOCs and other transport bodies hiring for apprentice positions.
Best of luck if you do succeed to those of you who apply, and please do share any information for incoming applicants and keep this thread informed of any new posts going up.
Chiltern Railways
Currently not open but are known to recruit for apprentice mechanical and electrical engineers from Wembley and Aylesbury depot around January and/or May. Check their website.
ThamesLink, Great Northern and Southern
Currently has a dedicated website for all GTR apprentices at http://gtrapprentices.com/ - not too sure on how often this is updated however but if you are interested, I would recommend searching through there every now and then as vacancies should come and go.
Great Western Railway, South Western Railway and Transpennine Express
All vacancies are on the universal FirstGroup recruitment portal at https://uk.firstgroupcareers.com/vacancy/find/results/#about-us - you will need to apply the 'apprentice' thread. Particularly for the buses half of the business, there's a constant stream of postings for apprentices/graduates throughout the year.
Some more information specifically for GWR aspiring apprentices and what the programme contains can be found here at https://www.gwr.com/apprenticeships
East Midlands Trains
EMT hosts a wide range of engineering apprenticeships usually based up in Derby and also for project management as well. These can be found here at https://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/information/careers/working-for-us/?box=3225
In addition, a talent pool for those wanting to join as a customer experience member tends to be open throughout the year quite often based in the London St Pancras end.
Transport for Wales Rail
All vacancies can be found on their new portal here at https://www.comeaboard.co.uk/ However at the time of posting, there are no apprenticeship vacancies.
Southeastern
Southeastern hosts an array of apprenticeships every year and can be found at https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/about-us/careers-at-southeastern/roles
These are in engineering, customer experience and the business sectors of the company.
Virgin Trains
Virgin Trains recruits for customer experience apprentices every year and this year has even started recruiting apprentice train drivers - all of these are based across the country on their West Coast route. You can find vacancies at https://my.corehr.com/pls/vtsrecruit/erq_search_version_4.start_search_with_params
