At the Bedwyn Trains Passenger Group we are getting lots of complaints of poor information during times of disruption. This includes CIS, verbal advice from station staff, PA announcements (including lack of) and help points. To that end I'm wondering if any of the following currently exist as a smartphone app?

1) An app, that on opening, takes your GPS location and displays the nearest station screen. i.e. if you are at a station it'll detect which one and display the departures and arrivals board for you.
2) An app that picks up what’s going on in real-time and advises you based based on your journey. You'd register where you are trying to get to or enter your pre-paid ticket. The app would then look after you and, knowing where you currently are, advise which real-time connections to get, and which platform is required.

Many thanks

For Android I use "Train Track" https://www.quantabyte.uk/traintrack

It satisfies point 1 and as far as point 2 you can set alerts for your trains (notifications: platform, arrival, departure, cancellation). You can click on each calling point of your train to get a list of departures for that station which is handy when trying to replan on the fly. Just no ticket related validation.

The Android app FASTEROUTE is my favourite. You can have a list of personal stations, but if you are not in their area the system brings up a map of nearby stations which you can click for instant departure and arrival listings.
A listing for a particular train shows its performance over the whole journey, rather than just from the onward journey from the selected station.
There is no charge for this app however long you may use it.
There is plenty of eye-catching colour - green ticks for 'running' and red crosses for 'cancelled' (many of those on TPE in the Manchester area at present) and useful platform indications.
I've just tried Train Track and have come to the instant conclusion that Fasteroute is much, much better in many ways.

I've just tried Fasteroute and, in my experience, it's the same as National Rail's live departure page, albeit with more colourful graphics. Just like National Rail there appears to be no way to check live departures more than two hours ahead.

Geoff Marshall's latest video has a moment at 1m44s where a phone appears to be showing the old London and Southeast Map (the one that used to occupy half of the back of the map given away in the national timetable book). Is this an app, or just a pdf, and has it been updated or is it an old one, and where could I get it?

I’m guessing it’ll just be a PDF of a map.

Surprisingly, the UK bus checker app gives realtime departure board info for rail stations as well as bus stops. It'll show nearby stations and stops on a map.
And of course, a standard app that comes with every Android phone is Google Maps! That too shows departure boards and will happily do journey planning for you. I've never used it as a live satnav on a train journey, but it works brilliantly in realtime for car journeys with recommended diversions when holdups occur on the original route.

A further thought on that! Google maps has no Start button for planned public transport journeys so you'd have manually manipulate it for every connection.

Perhaps we should ask them to do something about that lack.

Bedwyn is on here..

and I think it was on this forum I found out abound them.
This was new to me so I tried it. Very simple and you can select the most detailed information even for a mobile screen. No need to select "Mobile View"
