Some time around 2016 a link and sidings from Arcow Quarry was connected to the Settle to Carlisle line. Does anyone have any idea of how the signalling arrangements changed to facilitate this?

Before the link was installed i'm sure the closest signal that would protect it on the down main was near Settle, has there been a new signal installed on the main closer to the location of the quarry? Also, how are movements signalled out of the link on to the main line, is there a ground signal?

I understand that there is only the trailing connection to/from the down (northbound) line. So empty trains are backed in. Southbound trains go up to the loop at Blea Moor where the loco can be run round and they then can cross over to the up (southbound) track. I recall that required some adjustment to the signalling at Blea Moor.

AFAIK it’s fully signalled for all moves.
Its a ground frame with a switch panel which gets a release from Settle Jn. It is protected via SJ17 signal some 6 miles back, if a train is going into the quarry you need a 12 minute margin before the next train can pass Settle Jn.

Arcow Quarry has a ground frame, trains stop in section and reverse in. Trains cannot pass the Settle Jn section signal until the train is inside and the ground frame returned to normal. Not sure how departures work.

EDIT: The Planner got there before me!

Ah okay, so it is protected by the signal way back where I was referring to. Interesting.

Thanks to everyone for their input so far.

Departures are pretty similar, Settle gives the release to the ground frame, train departs, ground frame given back, next train passes SJ17 when the freight is past Horton in Ribblesdale/SJ16

Thanks for this. I've only ever needed to know that you can't pass Settle Jn until the freight's got past Horton in Ribblesdale, interesting to find out about the actual operations.
