Is it still possible to buy a platform ticket for gated stations, such as London King's Cross?

In general, if someone asks the gateline staff, and can exhibit a genuine need to be on the platform, the gateline staff will let them through.

Platform tickets are not the tool needed to spend time on a platform if the intention is just to spot or photograph trains. They offer no revenue protection opportunity to the train operators.

Would a desire to use a bar or retail unit be enough to convince the RPO to allow access, for example to visit The Pasty Shop in Leeds City station? Do most gatelines operate token systems that are handed over on exiting the Compulsory Ticket Area? I know that Sheffield station uses a token system for those wanting to use the footbridge when they do barriers.

A Compulsory Ticket Area is a specific thing that is pretty unusual outside of London.

I believe some operators or stations will sell platform tickets, but for NR stations such as King's Cross if you were intending to spend a while on platforms photographing you'd normally be asked to sign in at the station reception. If you were simply seeing somebody onto the train, then as mentioned above the gate staff will normally let you through.

Station master doesn't really exist anymore. The Station Shift Manager would probably give you a Visitors Pass/Name Badge or similar.
