Hi everyone,

Is it true the Enviro 400 MMC's from Southend will be moving to Wigston this coming weekend or has there been a change of plan?

Last I heard there had been a change of plan, though what, if any, effect that will have on Southend I’m not sure. I guess we’ll have to wait and see unless anyone else knows more?
It would certainly be a shame if they did go...

Unsure when the swap is taking place (I believe it is this weekend however) but the E400MMCs will going to Wigston with Volvo B7TLs going to Maidstone and finally completing the 3 way swap 58 reg E400s will go to Southend to replace the E400MMCs

The last word was that the Southend/Maidstone swap would be this weekend with the Leicester swap being the following weekend, so the MMCs will see service in Maidstone for a week.
However, I gather things are still up in the air and it may be that not as many MMCs will move north as was originally anticipated.

Would this be a move to ensure compliance with the Leicester LEZ?

The Essex Bus News Facebook post that originally bought the matter to my attention (if not that of others) seems to have been deleted. Whether that is a sign of changed plans, I know not.

It could have just been removed because it was information that wasn't supposed to be public knowledge but i am getting the feeling the swap isn't going to happen now :/

Does anyone know if the swap is still going ahead or have things changed?

From various different sources on social media, i believe the mmc's are staying at Southend now. It may have been something to do with involvement from Southend Council.

It wouldn't surprise me if the MMC's were never going to leave Southend in the first place, apparently the man who first brought this to everyones attention on Flickr has a history of saying this will happen or that will happen etc that turns out to be incorrect

In this case he was correct.

Who was this?

I thought I saw John Lidstone say something on this?

Thats who it was who started this, he posted it on Flickr the other week that the MMC's were going to Wigston but the truth is nothing had been confirmed at that point so the information was misleading. Apparently he is banned from the Short Street depot for making a nuisance of himself and many drivers have told me that engineering staff will often hide whenever he visits depots.

I'm not having ago at the man but he has published a lot of misleading and false information over the years which has in the past caused buses to be painted into the wrong liveries.

Really? Wasn't he the guy who used to collate the old Fleet News thing in Buses Magazine? Not bothered with it for years but name rings a vague bell

I'm interested to know how what he's posted led to buses being painted into the wrong liveries?

I have heard he does do the fleet lists in Buses Magazine and they're always full of errors so i'm told, i don't know exactly what happened but it has something to do with his input resulting in heritage liveried vehicles getting painted into the wrong liveries.

I'm only telling you what i've been told by multiple drivers, engineers and other spotters.

Unless somebody is breaking into the depot and changing official sources there is no way that a non-employee could be the one responsible for a bus being pained into the wrong livery (and I'd be highly suspicious of any information from sources that were claiming otherwise, as at the very least they seem to be scapegoating him for an internal (quite possibly their own) failure). If the lines of communication are so poor that those involved in painting are relying on non-official sources there is a much bigger problem that has led to such mistakes than the fact that a non-official source said something.
I suppose when it comes to heritage liveries it could be a case of buses being painted into a colour scheme that is slightly different to the original, if they were relying on him providing the information as to what the liveries were, but even then it is at least equally the fault of the people in charge of the depot for relying on a singular source that wasn't backed up with evidence.

I'm only quoting what i've been told by various people, i don't think he's been scapegoated though as many people all say the same thing. Another lad in my area said he was told that Southend would be getting Enviro 300's last year and it turns out to be completely false. There are photos on his Flickr of him visiting depots though.

JL's dislike of ASC is pretty obvious when you see some of the flickr albums on his stream with catty comments directed at the then management with gushing comments directed toward First Essex. Most of the management of that time are now working for Stagecoach South East. When I joined ASC (at head office) I was told they had contacted Buses Magazine withdrawing access to JL for any of their promotional events. Which is their right of course.
Whether or not that's been revoked I am not sure but his flickr stream does show he has been present for some official events subsequent to 2017 as he makes reference to ASC and their co-operation.
I don't know why Buses persists with Fleet News, we're not interested in JL's opinions and the 10-12 pages is a waste of ink and paper, is often inaccurate and the information is available elsewhere. Basic details like chassis and body types being incorrectly described. To me, those are schoolboy errors by someone who should have sufficient knowledge.
The space, IMO would be better used by articles. The Irish and Scottish Fleet News by comparison is always concise, accurate and well written.

Spot on, also judging by some of JGL's pics he can't tell the diffrence between a Commander and a Pulsar. He'll probably continue sucking up to First until they get sick of him as well and ban him from their depot like Arriva have done. I also believe JGL is responsible for many errors on the ukbuses.co.uk fleet lists, like a month or so ago it was claimed Volvo 3816 was withdrawn from service despite it still been in service and also the MMC's from Southend were listed as been transferred to Northfleet which was also untrue.

Not just the depot he was banned from, take that to read official events. Such as new vehicle launches etc.

That doesn't surprise me, he really has dropped some clangers in his time by all accounts. I'm still waiting for the 54 reg Cadets to arrive at Southend like he claimed was going happen

I'm not saying that he isn't a pest and a compulsive liar (although I really don't know enough to say anything on those comments either way), but to blame a non-employee for an extremely basic internal mistake is simply nonsensical. If a bus manages to be painted into the wrong livery there is a major issue with internal processes and they are extremely lucky that it was something as harmless as a paint job that alerted them to it (to the extent that it wouldn't surprise me if a transport commissioner got involved if it was publicly being blamed on an outsider as it suggests a failure to keep accurate maintenance records and a toxic culture where mistakes are blamed on outsiders without sufficient internal investigation or responsibility being accepted).

Not sure I understand your response, were you replying to me or to an earlier post? :s

That's such a shame. The UK Buses site would and could be really useful, but as you say it is totally riddled with errors

Could we try to keep the thread on topic please? It seems to have drifted somewhat. Thanks :)

Read a post on twitter that is claiming the E400MMCs are coming from Gillingham instead, not sure of the accuracy. Arriva Kent's official account replied (the post had a drawing of an MMC attached) but did not confirm or deny the rumour.

There are 5 E400MMCs for Leicester from Gillingham, the rest of the replacements are Volvo B9/Optare Olympus from Yorkshire. The first few of each type are already in service in Leicester.
