Back under Arriva Trains Northern (ATN), EWS class 37’s worked top and tail on ATN liveried Mk2 carriages over the Settle & Carlisle and also on the Harrogate line around 2003/4

I know some time has passed so it is something of a long shot, but is anyone able to provide or direct me to a list of which specific class 37’s operated on these services please?

I enjoyed travelling on these services back in the day as a youngster and I’m just trying to work out which loco’s may have been working.

37405, 408 and 37411 were the regular performers on the service throughout its operation - rotated as and when one of the two train locos required maintenance.

37042 also worked the train with 37411 on the 8th and 9th of June 2004, and 37521 worked with 411 on 13th July.
37698 worked with 37408 on 4th and 5th August 2004, and 37372 worked with 408 from the 16th to 18th of August.

Thank you very much for such a quick and thorough response :)

From memory 37405, 37408 & 37411 had received some modification for working in multi on the back of the train. I think it might have been something to do with their fire extinguisher system so they didn't need to have someone riding in the rear Loco.

One thing which still amuses me, we're now approaching 20 years since the 37s worked these services over the S&C and the "Loco Stop" boards which were specifically put up for these services are still standing at Kirkby Stephen (I can't speak for other locations)!

Are the loco stop boards still of use for railtours, Staycation Expres or perhaps when Tornado worked the line in association with Northern?

I see to remember these services were worked by crews from Healey Mills where the locos were stabled.
I rode one from Settle to Leeds and nearly all the passengers were enthusiasts.
I also tried to catch one at Hellifield on another occasion but it didn’t stop there, elementary mistake.

EWS Knottingley drivers and ATN link 1A Leeds conductors worked them. It may have been HM drivers in the earlier days but the sets certainly stabled at KY for much of the time the service operated.

37405 was a poor performer from what I remember and didn’t work the trains much, if at all during the latter months.

Incidentally a second set was wanted by ATN to work S&C services and Fragonset were approached about a rake of 2F’s with 31’s but it didn’t come off and these sets ended up working for FNW mainly on mid-Cheshire line services IIRC.

Try the above link, it gives you access to all workings that all 37's have done over the years since they were built. You can do by date/loco/text search.

I hope you get the answers you are looking for!
