Next Tuesday running a Blackpool to Carlisle service and back strangely. It’s showing as a passenger service but it’s just for engineers. The engineers are going to test the tilt on it on the north of the Mainline
Next Tuesday is now tomorrow and it shows on RTT that it will be operated by 390152, not 390125, so is it also refurbished or is this a mistake?

At Warrington Bank Quay today the 1322 {ex GLC} to Euston was Voyager 221103 obviously substituting for a Pendolino.
390016 failed on Polmadie this morning, with only 221103 spare. 103 returned north on the 16:57 Euston to Glasgow.

Something similar happened one day last week as well.

It now says it didn’t run due to a planning error
RTT is showing 390152 ran today from Carlisle to Blackpool (and left 49 minutes early).
I wonder if it was 390125 and someone put the 2 and the 5 in the wrong way around.

How did it get to Carlisle if the morning service was cancelled?

I did wonder if that was the planning error that prevented it from running. I was considering going to look at it at Preston.

390125 (the first refurbished train) is still at Longsight. 390152 is being used for special tests (not related directly to the refurbishment programme) running between Carnforth and Carlisle.

correct I spoke to an Alstom staff member and they said they’re testing the tilt on set 52 between Carlisle and carnforth they can’t store it in Preston or Carlisle overnight so it’s being kept in Blackpool overnight

Why are they testing the tilt when it hasn’t been refurbished?

Validation of a long-planned Tilt software update to incorporate additional remote condition monitoring amongst other features. This will allow the trains to identify potential track defects. All part of the plans to use service trains to continuously monitor the condition of the infrastructure where possible.

How do they do that? Something along the lines of sensing unexpected vibration through the wheelsets / bogies?

Each vehicle is fitted with accelerometers that are already used as part of the tilt control. With the current software, excessive acceleration alarms cause the tilt system to be shut down.
Lower level warning signals are now being introduced that will flag up locations that may indicate track or ride quality issues. This will not affect tilt operation but will utilise the train sensors to perform infrastructure monitoring.
The costs of safety-related software validation require a positive business case to be demonstrated in order to progress such changes.

Thanks.

Do they monitor voltage levels and physical condition of the OHL too?

Two Class 390 trains are fitted with instrumented pantographs to monitor the condition of the OLE.
In recent years we have also been analysing Traction fault data from across the fleet to identify locations with potential OLE issues. All trains are fitted with pantograph cameras and the images can be reviewed to ascertain the performance when such faults occur. This also means that when a defect is identified the repair teams can be sent to the precise location rather than having to search a wider area.

390125 is currently parked next to the running lines at Longsight. Looks rather smart having just trundled past it, all the interior lights are on. Seats look good.

Given that the expected start date for 390125 in service was 'mid to late April' a few weeks ago, does anyone have an update on when this is scheduled, or has it been delayed, yet again?

Reported in May's Modern Railways that 2 x 221 will go off lease from Avanti in June.
