So a whole four coaches on the Marston Vale !. Things were different then as I think only a pair of 20m coaches max are allowed these days !.
Unfortunately I did not note the coach numbers on that day, but I seem to remember it was a right mish-mash, at least two classes. Another trip later that year with a single bubble-car!

Birmingham – Nuneaton drags. Sadly the days of random 58s being provided by Saltley were long since gone, and it’s all 57s, but still worth it for the variety.

Were they random? I had always assumed that they were carefully selected to match somebody's red pen requirements.
You may well be right. If so, then "somebody" did very well out of it. They were always entirely random as far as my book was concerned.

Meanwhile ...
Thursday 22/01/04
I was attending some sort of meeting or event at Milton Keynes, so I decided the trip from Euston would be by HST, by way of a change:
43065 + 43098 0840 Euston – Milton Keynes Central
Many hours later, I rolled up to take my chance on the first service back to London. I dropped straight onto this, running 110 minutes late:
90015 1417 Milton Keynes Central – Euston

Monday 22/01/07
Required 57314 was supposedly allocated to the 2239 Wolverhampton – Euston drag, so I went to cover it.
350 114 2120 Rugby – Birmingham New Street
57302 2301 Birmingham New Street – Rugby
This ran booked route (i.e. via Coventry). The diesel was provided because of an OLE isolation further south – possibly unravelling / replacing some of the OLE spaghetti carnage at Ledburn Junction after the wires came down around my ears a few days previously. 57314 never appeared, but I required 57302 as well, so I was happy.

I went to bed last night happy to note that 1U28 was not shown as cancelled, and required 68033 was ending the day in the platforms at Scarbados...

...Up at 6am to discover that 033 was working 1U24 and 1U28 was plastic. :frown:

However, better news for my return across the Pennines:

68029 MAN – LDS 1U71

So after a 5/5 failure rate last week, I have finally managed to catch a Cat on this service.

I have another shot at 1U28 on Friday morning...

A lot of 'IF's' here, as in possible on the day hick ups, but back then I believe the loco diagram for 09.10 SX Waterloo took it to EX, back with the 14.20 to Waterloo, then Down to Salisbury/Yeovil with 2038 Waterloo, and finished back at Salisbury. On the following (SX) day the first turn for same loco (and stock set) was the 07.04 Salisbury to Waterloo.

I can list several occasions when this was the case, ie: 2038 loco (day 1) did indeed work the 0704 on day 2.

Whilst I can't comment about 19th Jan, I can say that the 07.04 on Friday the 20th was worked by 50029. Hope that may be of some use

A nice move, not sure it's good enough to warrant posting twice though!
Hmmm.....not sure exactly what happened there!

Ah yes, now I remember....after posting the first time I clicked on the back button a couple of times to see what the next topic was and then - after reading it - I clicked on the back button again and found an unfinished version of the 'Back in the Day' post. Therefore I finished it and clicked on 'Post reply', not realising that it had already been posted. Like a lot of people my age, I sometimes struggle with technology....not to mention memory! :frown:

27/1/84 (I think - incomplete notes only have the day and month)

31424 08:05 Birmingham - Norwich

31424 ??:?? Norwich - Birmingham. Delayed 65 minutes at Thetford with what I noted as "sticking brakes", carried on to Peterborough where some much tastier haulage would no doubt be waiting. Forward with 31421 :'(

A couple of late entries due to having just a few days up in Scotland

Between 1987-1989 BR ran special offers for railcard holders offering cheap travel early in the year. In early 1987 I was travelling on a Family Railcard. In May 1987 I acquired a Young Person's Railcard

Saturday 24th January 1987 (Family RC promotion)

43117+43161 0930 Kings X - Leeds
Class 101 DMU 1228 Leeds - Bradford I
Class 104 DMU 1720 Bradford I - Leeds
43040+43152 1755 Leeds - Kings X

Tuesday 24th January 1989 (Work related)

1254+3002 1045 Waterloo - Eastleigh
73112+73134 1400 Eastleigh - Waterloo

Saturday 24th January 2004

A trip to Doncaster. I chose my train very carefully!
43177 + 43xxx 0706 Reading – Paddington
90021 0840 Kings Cross – Doncaster
After that, it all went a bit Sulzery …
47828 1431 Doncaster – Birmingham New Street via Swinton, Masborough, Sheffield
47848 1706 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Coventry

90047 1350 Birmingham NS - Euston
90047 1558 Euston - Birmingham NS

Which nicely takes me to 49/50 for Class 90.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that found 90047 elusive!

Saturday 30/01/10
A weekend of spectacular diversions involving the 67-hauled WSMR services. There was a block somewhere on the Chilterns, but WSMR were determined to run through to / from Marylebone. (You might need to get the rail atlas out for this bit!).
67010 0901 Tame Bridge Parkway – London Marylebone via Aston, Stechford, Weedon, Acton Canal Wharf, Greenford, South Ruislip (reverse).
After a visit to relatives in Reading (HST both ways) I returned to Marylebone later that day for the journey back north:
67014 1922 London Marylebone – Tame Bridge Parkway via South Ruislip (reverse), Greenford, Acton Main Line, Acton Wells, SW Sidings, Mitre Bridge (reverse), Weedon, Stechford, Aston.

Sunday 31/01/10
The next day, another (even rarer) route variation:
67012 1854 Tame Bridge Parkway – London Marylebone via Aston, Stechford, Weedon, Acton Canal Wharf (reverse), Neasden Junction (reverse).
A more normal route back home.
390 043 2155 Euston – Rugby via Northampton.

90047 was my last one for haulage. It was certainly regarded as the rarest on passenger work for a number of years.

I had it twice in 1990 in the West Midlands. 48, 49 and 50 are still required by me.
